Do You Text Message While Driving?

I was recently reading an article in the The New York Times where a 17-year old girl and four of her friends were killed in a car crash which police say was caused by three factors: her inexperience at the wheel, driving at high speeds and the text messaging that occurred while she was driving. Two minutes before the accident was reported, the driver had sent a message to one of her friends.

We all know the risks of talking on your cell phone while driving, but is texting just as bad? I guess those few seconds you take to look at the message or write a reply can have fatal results. But then again, I often see people eating, doing their make-up and reading newspapers while driving - scary but true!

We know people can be pretty uninhibited when it comes to car behavior, but are you a chronic text messager while driving? If you are, why do you do it? Boredom? A cheap way to chat with friends? Do tell!

it's pretty much the dumbest thing you can do while driving besides drink. my sister totaled her car while doing it, slammed into the back of an elderly couple on their way to bible study. thank goodness no one was hurt.

Deep dark confession: I've done it a few times. It's dumb, but if you're in a hurry or late for something... if it's important and it only takes a minute...

No, there isn't an excuse. I'm just retarded.

I'm guilty of doing it, but I got so much practice doing it secretly while in class, that I don't even have to look at the phone while I'm texting anymore. I only read the ones sent to me if I'm stopped, or get whoever else I'm with to read them.

Oh sure i've done it... I have one of those QWERTY keyboards.. but let me tell you, it's dangerous!! Even if you know where the keys are and don't have to look at the phone, you're still distracted and not fully paying attention at the wheel.
Texting is just as bad as talking on the phone while driving.

I've done it once or twice, but the last time I almost got into an accident. After that, I put my phone down.

Sometimes, but only when I'm in that traffic so bad that you might as well turn off your car. You know the type - when you haven't moved 3 feet in 20 minutes.

I only do it once in a great while, because I'm too klutzy to do two things at once.

I've never done this, but I used to put on mascara at stoplights. It's all dangerous and stupid. Especially for people that have less driving experience.

I've never even thought about doing it. At least when you're just talking on it you're looking out the window, and not at the phone. No one has a conversation through texting that can't wait a two minute drive.

I'm guilty..I really need to stop but there just isnt enough time in the day! Its not only texting but emails. Usually during traffic or when the road is clear.. I'm def. going to work on doing it less.

wow. people do that? crazy. i'm in New zealand this year and the drivers are the worst i've seen in my life (and i've been to india!) so i can't imagine anyone doing anything, let alone texting while driving here. there are too many accidents already.

I think it's about the dumbest thing you can do while you're driving. I don't know why people do it. I mean what is honestly so important that can't wait until you get to your destination? You're not only putting yourself in danger, but you're putting people around you and people in your car in danger. So for all those who text while driving, PLEASE stop! Thanks.

I do it. And ironically, the only times I've had an accident were when I wasn't even touching my phone.

It's crazy to text message while driving! Even just talking is distracting. What is equally annoying is those who defend their dangerous behavior of texting and driving. You know you shouldn't do it, so next time pull over -- You might get there faster if you don't, but you may not get there at all if you.Five seconds could save your life.

Only when stopped at a light or in bumper to bumper traffic. My bf used to text me while he was driving all the time, and I'm like "why can you not just call me?"

I live in the town where the 5 girls died. It is horribly sad. Texting while driving is not safe, no matter how good you think you are at it.

unfortunately, i too am guilty of texting while i drive. but i try to limit it to stop and go traffic (which i'm mostly always in) and at red lights. it's a really bad habit, but when you're stuck in your call all the time, you don't always have a choice.

No, and I'm sorry, but I think anyone that does should seriously reevaluate their priorities. When you are driving, you are essentially at the helm of a gigantic projectile. Why the hell would you think that sending a text message is more important than making sure that you don't kill the other people on the road? There are already SO many deaths in the US because of car crashes each year, why do anything to add to that statistic?

    Seriously. It's beyond stupid.

I have to admit that I have done it... but I read the same article and in my car today, I went to text and remebered the article and stopped myself. Sending a text is not worth an accident!

well, i just wanted to say to those that posted and said there isn't enough time in the day...well i learned that there are 144,000 minutes in a day. if that isn't enough time to get the things done that you need to get done then your lack of time isn't the day's fault but your own. i used to be the same until i learned how to better track my time and scheduling with a day planner. i schedule everything (even dinner with the gf or 'rents) and i'm never late and never miss anything. try it for 6 mos and i can guarantee if you use it correctly the who excuse "not enough time in a day" will change to "too much time in the day". trust me

btw, i never answer, txt, talk, im, or anything else on the phone. if i'm on the freeway i'll check the front panel read out and if it looks important i'll take the next exit and pull into a gas station. they just did a study at the university of utah provo campus where they found people who were drunk drove better than those who were sober but talking on the phone. interesting stuff.
