Airports With Free WiFi in the United States

I'd be scared to add up all the money I've spent on airport WiFi connections in the past few years. As much as I moan and complain, I'm always willing to spend $5, $10 and sometimes $20 for an hour of Internet access. All hope is not lost. The Athletic Minded Traveler has just announced that San Diego can be added to the growing list of airports that are becoming "Internet Friendly" (offering free WiFi). What, a growing list? Yes it's true, airports with free WiFi do exist. Here's a list of some airports in the US that have free WiFi:

  • Charlotte, NC
  • Jacksonville, FL
  • San Diego, CA
  • Kansas City, MO
  • Las Vegas, NV
  • New Orleans, LA
  • Orlando, FL
  • Pittsburgh, PA
  • Portland, OR
  • Phoenix, AZ
  • Sacramento, CA
  • Tucson, AZ
  • Tampa, FL

Check out TravelPost and WiFi Free Spot for a complete and up-to-date list of airports that currently have free WiFi.

San Antonio, TX has Free Wifi in one of their Terminals. Terminal 2. For some reason they don't have it in Terminal 1. I used to work there, so on my breaks I would grab my laptop and make use of it.

I just heard on the news yesterday that Denver also now has free Wi-Fi. Now if only they would get more outlets so I don't drain my laptop battery while waiting!

Wifi in the airport is never anything I really look for. I rarely fly with my laptop, and when I do, I usually do not use it in the airport as I always am on my Blackberry!

    FLL does too

Surprisingly the first airport that offered free WiFi that I had been to was SJO in Costa Rica. That was a few years ago and I had to pay at domestic airports at that time.

HotSpot providers in the other locations *pay* the airports with a minimum annual guarantee (MAG) to be there and in turn collect revenue from its customers to pay for the costs to maintain the network, costs to upgrade the network, the costs to deploy a fiber network in the airport and the customer care costs to support it all. And, yes, they made a little money for providing the service.

Now, the airports are wanting free Wi-Fi for their passengers and employees (why do you want them surfing?), but don't want to pay companies to provide the service. So either you get inundated with pop-up ads or junk mail in your inbox (but likely both). Then you get lousy service where the network is down or slow, there is no customer care to report the service to and it takes weeks to get it fixed once someone remembers to e-mail them from another HotSpot. And the last thing on the service provider's mind is to upgrade the network or get a bigger pipe to the Internet to support all the people using the free service (multiply your DSL pipe at home by about 300-400 people using it). He's worried about paying the bill collector for all that network gear he had to put in the airport to begin with because pop-up ads only make 1cent per click. Another option is that the airport pays for the service. But the cities that run the airports don't have any money, especially since they were *making* money from payphones and WiFi just a few years earlier.

There really is nothing for free. Someone has to pay for the service.
