The Internet has been so over-saturated with the geeky cake phenomena that I have been totally brainwashed into thinking that everything edibly geek must be sweet. Not so, says the "1Up Mushroom" Mushroom Burger!

The only edible 1Up mushroom treat that I had spotted before was these candy sours, but now my mouth is watering for red meat, mozzarella, and portobello mushrooms. And some green food coloring for the caps, too, obviously.

I literally did a huge geek gasp when I saw this exquisite Mario Kart Cake on Flickr the other day. Stop me if you've heard this before but, this one has to beat all the other yummy geek cakes I've ever seen!

This chocolate decadent cake, filled with chocolate cake, chocolate mousse, ganache, and buttercream, was made to celebrate the bride and groom — and their love of Mario Kart! Flickr user M.A.L. tells us how they came up with the idea:

We were looking for ideas to make our wedding different and our own, a unique wedding cake was one of the things we came up with. My wife suggested the idea of having a video game cake after we saw one online. We wanted a game that we both enjoyed and decided on the game series we have spent the most time playing together. Coincidentally, the latest Mario Kart game was released on the same weekend of our wedding.

Chocolate Gadgets: There's No Such Thing as Too Sweet

When it comes to love, two things are certain: I love gadgets and chocolate. They each provide a sweet, satisfying escape and make my day that much better. Sure, one ends up burning energy while the other is high in calories and fat, but I still love them equally. Am I expecting some chocolately gadget goodness tonight? You bet. I've had way too many nights stranded in my kitchen, starving, and surrounded by condiments, one chicken breast, and a can of tomato soup. RecipeMatcher is my new savior — you just type in the ingredients you have on hand and it figures out recipes for you based on what you entered! I arbitrarily added chicken breast, tomato soup, basil, and potatoes, and it came up with a ton of suggestions, including Italian Chicken and Potatoes. RecipeMatcher tells you additional ingredients you may need if your submissions are a bit bare bones like mine, but they're mainly basics like garlic or Italian dressing. This definitely beats that sad box of macaroni I usually resort to!

PS RecipeMatcher also works for cocktails, so you can drink responsibly and with flair!

These vibrant Pacman treats come adorned with the cherries, ghosts and golden Pacman taken from the original arcade video game. Hello naomi confesses that she's added a touch of "artists interpretation" to her geekilicious creations by including an eye on Pacman—Maybe it's just me but I think Pacman looks much better with an eye, now he can see what he's eating! Kids in Perugia, Italy got quite the surprise when Sony unveiled a stack of 150
chocolate PlayStation 3 consoles during the Eurochocolate festival. Discussed on Kotaku, a matching chocolate SIXAXIS controller also made an appearance at the event—supersized, naturally. Two hundred smaller chocolate PlayStation 3 controllers were broken up and handed out for the crowd to enjoy. The chocolate and confetti PlayStation 3 fun was a way for Sony to display their newest SKU PlayStation which boasts a 40GB hard disk drive. NYC Googlers Celebrate by Eating Their Office

In honor of the first anniversary of the Google New York office, staffers celebrated by creating a cake to look exactly like their entire office building—which just so happens to span a full city block! With the help of Google Earth and Google street view, pastry chef Danita Holt was able to draw up blueprints to begin the process of building such a ginormous cake. After four days, cafe director Kevin McConvey alongside two sous chefs, two pastry chefs, an executive chef and a line cook were able to finish the five feet long, three feet high and two feet wide Googleplex cake which contained 630 eggs, 105 pounds of sugar and 20 pounds of butter! Talk about the perfect specifications for the ultimate edible geek treat!

The first time we witnessed a Rubik's Cube Cake it featured three square facelets tilted on their axes, providing a complicated "Rubik's Cube in mid-solution mode" feeling. Today I offer you a less intricate, but larger and more colorful Rubik's Cube cake created as a birthday treat for a self described geek by his mother. I adore the textured icing and rich color choice and love the fact that instead of doing a freestyle icing job she used a real cube as a model. It's geekalicous!

A very long time ago someone started a nasty rumor that geeks live on soda, candy and junk food. While I steer clear of junk food, many of you already know we at the Sugar Network office have a serious collective sweettooth. So how do we stay awake when we blog into the wee hours? Caffeine. Sweet caffeine.

I was doing a little research about what other geeks are using to fuel their creative juices (seriously, a girl can only drink so many Diet Cokes a day!) and stumbled upon ThinkGeek's collection of caffeinated candy, mints and even soap. Most of the items have at least as much caffeine as a cup of coffee. The Mega Caffeine Candy Sampler, v6.0 looks like the entry point into the sweet caffeine universe, offering samples of nine varieties for $22.99. I'll never sleep again.

When I saw Martha Stewart on the cover of August's 'How To' edition of Wired Magazine showing off her "homemade" Wii cake I briefly considered following her directions and recipe (hers was mostly cardboard and not edible). That is until I remembered what a disaster I am when it comes to baking projects. When I learned Flickr user rufus50 (real name Brian W) had taken the Martha Stewart cover as a personal challenge to create a scrumptious Wii cake I tracked him down. No, I didn't get a piece, but it sure looks amazing.

Martha Stewart Does Edible Geek On Wired

Homemaking expert Martha Stewart may not have stripped down like Jenna Fischer for her cover of Wired, but she does get her geek on with a baked-to-perfection Wii cake and by revealing her inner techieness.

Gadget obsessed Martha stays connected with her BlackBerry and Razr (pink perhaps?) and it's no surprise that the super organized Stewart has a "servery," a room with two long white marble counters on either side with lots of plugs, where she keeps her gadgets, charges her cameras and stores batteries. She also attempts to keep wires and "crap" (no lie) to a minimum, opting for iPods in every room with wireless speakers. Here are some more highlights from the interview:

On the new marthastewart.com re-design: "I'm working on Marthapedia right now, which is my version of Wikipedia. If you know how to take red wine out of a white cloth napkin better than I do, that's good to know. We'll be editing user content, and it won't be as freewheeling as Wikipedia. Because a lot of this — you have to really monitor it."
What geeks can learn from her: "First of all, they can learn to prioritize, and they can learn how to make things beautiful. It's about using your hands and your mind to make things work better. Whether you're a programmer or a seamstress, it's all about new techniques, simplifying old techniques, and consolidating steps. Making things go faster — but not worse. Better."

Can it be? An actual Nintendo DS Jello Cake with controls, the princess and built-in speakers? No fancy photography or photoshop here folks- this cake is the real deal. Kotaku got their hands on this delicious dish which definitely gets an award for originality in geeksugar's edible geek collection. Seriously, how easy can it be to make jiggly jello look like a DS Lite? I'm no Martha Stewart, but I'd say it isn't the easiest thing to do!

Sure, at first glance this picture just looks like pretty chocolate broken into smaller-than-usual segments and fashioned into pretty shapes. Look closer and you'll see a puzzle of what looks like hundreds of pixels.

Apparently, designer Tithi Kutchamuch intentionally left holes in the design because he wanted to make a point about how bargain food - particularly sweets - continues to be a crutch for the masses. His idea is that these chocolates would cost as much or more than standard chocolates, but you would be sold less. It's a "less is more" concept we don't see often in the fast-food/snack or gadget world, but is interesting nonetheless. For an additional image,

My boyfriend's college roommate Eric was a soccer player who would get up at 3:30 in the morning to go to practice, go to class, return home in the afternoon and game. I'm talking all-nighter, XBox live sessions where he would wear a headset and face off against some unknown person halfway across the US. Needless to say, despite being a fit athlete, these gaming binges went hand in hand with candy and caffeinated soda consumption.

A company called Uncommon Loot is banking on the fact that there are a bajillion men, women and children like Eric out there in the world. People so tuned into their gaming that they need Headshot, a chewy chocolate toffee bar "made for gamers by gamers." Despite only being moderate gamers, who willingly choose parties and sleep over Halo 2 marathons, PartySugar and I got a chance to test out the bars recently. For our review,

We've all had more than our fair share of edible geek items in recent months, or at the very least ogled them, so I figured it was high time we settle this debate once and for all. From Rubik's Cube cakes, TiVo cakes, Helio Ocean cakes and even meticulously planned Super Mario and Zelda bride and groom cakes - there isn't a slice we haven't seen. Or at least so I thought, until I happened upon the Max Webo cake. Webo was a breaking point for me because it was so geeky I didn't remember know who it was. Yes, that's right I didn't know that Webo performed for Jabba the Hutt in Return of the Jedi. So what do you think: Has this edible geek phase gone too far or is it only the beginning? Source

Edible Geek: Helio Ocean Cake

I must admit, I had a little warning that LilPeaPod was planning on making her boyfriend a special Helio Ocean Cake so it was all I could think about this weekend. It turned out a bajillion times more beautiful than I dreamed and certainly outdoes the Rubik's Cube cake, matching his and her TiVo cakes and even an assortment of geeky wedding cakes. "I wanted to do something really special for the BBQ we were having in his honor," said LilPeaPod. "After tossing around ideas of gifts, I came up empty handed. He has everything that he wants! What could top his Helio Ocean?! That's right my friends, A Helio Ocean CAKE!!! My Mom helped me with the details, walked me through frosting the cake, how to use fondant, painting the pieces with food coloring and four point five hours later we had this masterpiece."

Edible Geek: Rubik's Cube Cake

Knowing that there are people out there that love Super Marios Bros., Nintendo and Star Wars enough to make geeky bride and groom cakes should have been all the warning I needed to ease me into this Rubik's Cube Cake, but somehow it just wasn't. The maker was a British fellow, James Kemp, who has always been a fan of the Rubik's cube. "I first got a cube as a 12 year old in England back in 1980 and have been hooked ever since," Kemp says. His local pub held a competition for the gentlemen who were regulars to bake a cake (seriously, how come my local pub hasn't thought of that?). Mr. Rubik's cube won of course - beating out 11 other cakes.

Somehow, this one beats out the his and her TiVo cakes on the geek chic scale. You can follow the recipe and make it yourself, but if you do, you better send me a photo!

Maker Faire: Interactive Wedding And Birthday Cakes

JiSun Lee's booth at this weekend's Maker Faire featured my favorite "science faire meets real life" art pieces. Lee pulled my boyfriend and I out of the crowd, pinned a white wedding veil on my head and put a bow tie on my boyfriend in record time (he didn't even have time to panic!) then led us to her interactive wedding cake. We were then instructed to push the buttons on the outside of the three-layer cake until the small bride and groom figures on the top of the cake got close enough to one another to kiss. It took us a few tries, but each try was filled with romantic geekiness. When we finally found the right buttons, the cake, which was made of plastic and all wired up, lit up and sang the traditional wedding song.

JiSun Lee created the interactive wedding cake and a more simple birthday cake with YouJeong Paik with the idea that they could increase the enjoyment of significant moments in people's lives. "I designed this cake with my baby and friend in mind," says Lee. "The birthday and wedding cakes need the user's input to turn on and blow out the LED candles. At the end of the user's experience, he or she will hear the greeting messages accompanied by music."

The Chocolate Laptop Wedding Cake

A big thanks to geeksugar reader mf cohen, who sent us this yummy edible geek laptop creation! This is what she had to say about it: "A grooms cake is a southern wedding tradition. In addition to the wedding cake, you have a grooms cake to celebrate the grooms hobbies or interests, so you can be assured there's at least one thing at the wedding that's about them. Since my husband is a software engineer, I couldn't think of anything more appropriate than a laptop! I was really pleased that the pastry chef at Santa Rosa Golf and Beach Club took the challenge. Our guests including my husband's boss were dually impressed. If all laptops were made of chocolate, I might be interested in becoming a software engineer too! P.S. This was in 2005!" What a great, delicious idea! Now I can't help but try and figure out what brand of laptop the chef was replicating... Dell, Compaq, or maybe a Toshiba? What do you think?

There are designers who create with the consumer in mind and designers who create with the end product in mind. Chris Dimino is of the last variety. He created the "The Corona-Matic," which is an old unusable typewriter transformed into a waffle maker. Says Dimino: "Problem: Typewriter - Take this now useless item and give it a new life than it was intended to have. Solution: The Corona-Matic, a typewriter turned into a waffle iron that makes keyboard-shaped waffles.

I suddenly have visions of myself being the coolest mom ever and making keyboard, Nintendo controller and DS-Lite shaped waffles.

I tend to keep up on tech and cake news so I should have realized that a surge of geeky cakes, like the iPhone cake and the Super Mario Bros. cake would influence the wedding cake market and give birth to beauties like this Nintendo wedding cake I found on Flickr. I am going to attribute the trend to a couple things, one being the Ace of Cakes show on the Food Network, which details the joy of a finely designed and decorated cake, and the other being the fact that nothing looks more delicious than a giant Nintendo.

There are many things to be said here, starting with kudos for the non-traditional cake (my Flickr snooping tells me the rest of their wedding was pretty traditional and elegant). The caption explains that the groom is a big Nintendo fan (no doy!). I say, that bride must be amazing.

Chocolate Gadgets of course.

The company that makes them is hoping consumers will want to "celebrate changing technology with chocolate cell phones, chocolate computers, chocolate microphones and chocolate computer accessories."

You can get a cell phone, iPod, remote, Blackberry, computer or mouse for about $3 each, but you have to buy in bulk. That's a lot of geeky chocolate.

A pack of University researchers from in the UK have devised a very geeky way to test out bacon, or in their words, make the "perfect bacon butty." Researches found that two or three back bacon rashers should be cooked under a preheated oven grill for seven minutes at about 475F. They tried multiple types and cuts of bacon, cooking techniques, types of oil and a range of cooking times at different temperatures. A shortlist was then tested with computers to measure the texture of each sandwich, reports the BBC.

The 'perfect formula' is:

N = C + {fb(cm) . fb(tc)} + fb(Ts) + fc . ta
N = force in Newtons required to break the cooked bacon.
fb = function of the bacon type.
fc = function of the condiment/filling effect.
Ts = serving temperature.
tc = cooking time.
ta = time or duration of application of condiment/filling.
cm = cooking method.
C = Newtons required to break uncooked bacon.

The experiment took more than 1,000 hours testing 700 variations on the traditional bacon sandwich. I am neither a chef or a bacon eater, but I am more than willing to chaperone or judge Yumsugar's next sandwich making session. Formulas and all.
