Macworld 2009: The 17-Inch MacBook Pro Is Unveiled

They always manage to save the best for last — don't they? Phil Schiller just announced the new MacBook Pro, which is the world's thinnest 17-inch notebook, measuring in at .98-inches thick, and weighing only 6.6 pounds. On the side of the laptop, you'll find a Mini Display port, a Firewire 800, digital audio in/out ports, three USB ports, Expresscard, and the standard Ethernet and Magsafe. An optional add-on? You can pay an extra $50 for an antiglare screen if you really want to pimp it out.

Other great features include the glass trackpad, which includes four-finger gestures functionality and multibutton support. It even comes with the longest-lasting battery ever, which is said to last up to eight hours on a single charge. The sad part? It's built-in, so you're stuck with it. And for eco-chic peeps, it's EPEAT Gold, and arsenic, BFR, mercury, PVC free, and comes with 34 percent less packaging that's highly recyclable. The new MacBook Pro's will start shipping late January and will cost $2,799.

Last week at the Apple Event in Cupertino, CA, Apple Chief Operating Officer, Tim Cook, announced an interesting fact; that Apple had surpassed Dell to become the top supplier of notebooks in colleges and universities. In previous years, fifteen percent of students had Apple notebooks, now the number is closer to fifty percent. Tim then popped this pic up on the big screen and challenged the audience to find a PC. I myself was a Dell Inspiron girl in my early days of University, and I rarely lugged it to class with me — still a paper and pen note taker back then. What about you? Did (or do) you take a laptop to class with you? And if so, was it a Mac or a PC?

Apple's New Black Glass Screen: Better or Worse?

It sounds like everyone is universally excited about the new pricing and specs for the new MacBooks, but one area where I'm hearing different things is in the design. The new MacBooks look like the new Pros, with black glass corner-to-corner around the screen, and black keyboards like the Air has always had. This is obviously different than the old version (still currently available as the $999 entry-level MacBook) that's all white plastic. I try not to get too attached to any Apple design since it's inevitable that they get tweaked a little, and I'm also curious to see the changes they make, like the slick black edges and keyboard, but I've already heard a lot of dissent. Tell me, do you think the new black design is better or worse?

Q: What is the status of 17-inch MacBook Pro?
A: The 17-inch MacBook Pro is still available, and is in the process of being refreshed.

Q: Will there be an option for matte screens or are you going with glass screens all the way?
A: Glass all the way. We ran into hesitation with iMacs, but it's just so much better. It's like night and day.

It's clear that Steve and Apple are psyched on the new details of the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, but they're the most proud of their MacBooks.

It's not only the best-selling Mac ever, but it's "one of the best ever products in the industry," says Steve — and it's about to get better. Where to begin?

The price point of the MacBook is coming down! The entry price of the MacBook dropped from $1099 to $999! The 160 GB version is $1299, and the 250 GB is $1599.
The body will be available in aluminum, just like the MacBook Pros and Air.
They'll be built brick-style — that is, out of one piece — and will be half a pound lighter than the earlier MacBooks.
They get the one-button glass trackpad and the corner-to-corner black glass display (hot!) like the new Pros.
It's made and packaged in an environmentally responsible way; it finally got EPEAT Gold certification and is made with 42 percent less packaging.

Guest speaker, Apple Designer Jony Ive, had us reverting to our middle school days when he presented us with slides that dissected a MacBook and MacBook Air. The focus was on the encasing that comes with the new MacBook Pros that will look very similar to the MacBook Air. In the past, MacBooks have been produced with layers of materials that make the MacBook Pro strong but heavy. When Apple released the Air, they started fresh and encased the Air in just one layer of aluminum — making it lighter, slimmer, and stronger.

The new MacBooks and MacBook Pros will all follow this anatomy with just one slice of aluminum, which has been molded around its parts. I got a firsthand look at the new skeleton of the MacBook Pros – trust me when I say it's light!

Steve Jobs introduced the new MacBook Pros today here in Cupertino, which has me very happy since mine is on its last leg as we speak! The new MacBook Pros will contain a slamming new graphics card from Nvidia (great for all you animators and gamers out there), a LED backlit display, a whole new glass trackpad that comes minus a button (click right on the track pad to select), some cool four-finger gestures, a magnetic latch, and a unibody enclosure, which means the body is made from one solid piece of aluminum and is stronger than any other MacBook produced.

Another great feature of the MacBook Pro is its eco status. Because of the solid casing, Apple can use 50 percent less materials to get this bad boy on the market, and use discarded aluminum for other products like iPods, or even other MacBooks. All the standard specs are there: WiFi enabled, Bluetooth, and all your essential connectors.

The rumors have been flying about what Apple has in store for us in the next few months. What will it be? A mini iPhone Nano? An inexpensive mini laptop? Refreshed MacBooks? Oh please Apple insiders, shed some light on this highly debated topic! Well the Silicon Alley Insider got hold of Credit Suisse analyst Bill Shope's Apple predictions and according to him, some new products are certainly on the horizon while other rumored ones, not so much. I was first on the scene to report that Apple would be announcing a new MacBook and MacBook Pro today and guess what all you naysayers — I was right! Both the MB and MB Pro have received major upgrades, including the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processors, larger hard drives (MBP 200GB-250GB, MB 120GB - 250GB), and more memory. Unfortunately, the multitouch trackpad is only coming to the Pro. . . . One would assume that Jobs would have wanted to make this a standardized feature across the board?!

Prices start at $1,999 for the 15-inch MacBook Pro and $1,099 for the 13-inch MacBook.

According to my Apple insiders, Apple will unveil both a new MacBook Pro and a new MacBook tomorrow. Recently, AOL's Switched had the pleasure of talking with gadget goddess Emmy Rossum. While busy on the road, Emmy always makes sure she has her BlackBerry and iPod on hand to keep her company. On what cell phone she has right now and what she loves/hates about it? "I have the new LG ENV. I love the keyboard (as it makes texting so fast and fun), the high quality camera and camcorder! I like downloading ring tones to my phone of whatever song I'm loving at the moment."

Is she a Mac or PC girl? "Mac. I love iTunes, iPhoto and the laptop built-in camera is great for "seeing" friends and family when I travel."

On what gadget she would take with her on a stranded island: "Probably an iPhone. I would have music, movies, and contact with my friends on instant messenger while calling to be rescued! "

Press command-shift-I, which will open your email and automatically insert the URL from the website you were visiting into the body of your email. Just type in the recipient's name, give it a subject and click send, and in seconds your website will be shared with others.

Pete Doherty Records Paparazzi With His MacBook

I don't think anyone is going to be convinced Pete Doherty has turned in his rocker persona for a more geeky one, but he deserves props for fanning off the paparazzi with his all powerful MacBook instead of say, a blow to the head.

Apparently, Doherty was leaving fiancée Kate Moss’s home in St. Johns Wood Tuesday, when he found himself being followed by cameramen. Instead of flipping out, he whipped out his MacBook and started recording them with his built-in iSight video.

See how chic being geeky can be? No bruises, no court dates, just video feed and a pretty sleek computer. I say Kate's chicness is rubbing off on the man.

And here I was thinking iSight was only good for video chatting with cross country friends.

Geek Tip: Optimize Your Mac's Performance

If you want to give your beautiful Mac laptop that extra bit of mojo it needs to get back in the fast lane, here are a few tips that just might do the trick.
Clean out start-up items To avoid unnecessary applications automatically setting themselves as start-up items, go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items. To remove them, click on the item and hit the minus button at the bottom of the list. Be careful not to delete any important applications!

My Favorite Gadgets: Home and Work

I'm a firm believer that a person's workspace says a lot about them. Some are meticulously clean (ahem, PartySugar), some a wee bit messy (ahem, yours truly) and some are neat, polished and organized (ahem, Phasekitty).

Phasekitty was kind enough to share her favorite gadgets at home and at work. "I take my MacLappy (my Macbook) back and forth with me, but when I get home I've got my prized iMac + AVID (MacAvid, for short) that I use for video editing (that's why I have all the external hard drives)," says Phasekitty. "Okay, so I name all of my computers (the PC in the left corner of Home I just call "piece," take that as you will...I'm a converted Mac lover Smiling), so call me a geek if you will, but I'm currently in love with both my home and work set up."
