The editor and users are able to give all of the apps a rating, as well as leave comments and feedback about their experience with a particular app. This is especially useful for the ones you have to pay for and want to make sure they're worth buying.

So far I'm doing really well on my New Year's resolution, which is to try to run every . . . well, often. Any websites or iPhone apps that I can use to help me in these pursuits, I will, because being able to combine my geek life with anything else is the way to make me succeed.

My new social network is the Daily Mile, which lets me post my workouts and the details; whether or not I use the social aspect (I do enjoy the encouragement), having a place to record my progress is a big boost.

And if I ever fulfill my resolution enough, I can use Daily Mile's boards to check out group runs and marathons in my area. It's 2009, anything can happen.

If you like the idea of reading your RSS news in magazine/newspaper format, there's a new site called Tabbloid that will whip up your feed in a PDF doc that you can easily print up and take with you on the go.

Formerly just a popular Facebook app, TV Loop has gone indie and launched its own website — think of it as a hub of TV paradise mixed in with its own social network.

Once you sign up, you customize your homepage by picking your favorite TV shows, past and present. From there, fun clips, trivia quizzes, photos, and quotes from those shows that cover your screen. The constant trivia quiz (yes, I aced the Gilmore Girls one) already had me losing a half hour of my time. Time well spent, though.

This may come as a shock to some of you, but sometimes cell phone shopping is not based on what someone can afford — no, sometimes people have to decide based on what service is best for them. Since I have crying jags when I'm in deadzones, I can empathize with the need for the very helpful website Got Reception?

Using a Google map and your zip code (or a zip code you might be visiting often), Got Reception tells you which cell phone company's service is strongest — or weakest — in a given area. Do you ever joke around with friends and say things like "If you pay me $5,000, I'll sail to China and back?" I know I have, at least after a beer or two, and now there's actually a legit site that brings fairytale fantasies to fruition.

Things For Sale That I Will Mail You lists personal assignments for artist David Horvitz to achieve, like asking for $2,443 to go to Iceland to find you three things or offering to go to a small Okinawan island for $1,626 to send you an envelope of star sand (this one is my fave). You can donate as much as you like, and once David receives the full amount, he adds the task to his "view all purchases" page. It not only lists all of the adventurous tasks he's fulfilled, but it includes the name of the person who paid for his trip. A very cool idea indeed.

I'm already quite pleased with myself for how I'm using online resources to make my holidays more organized. I've got my shopping lists laid out on Google Docs, all my party dates and assignments in Deadline, but who would have thought there was also a website for Secret Santa?

Elfster makes the classic holiday party/office game and makes it easy — first, as the organizer you set up the exchange, inputting money limits, sign-up and exchange dates, and then Elfster allows you to send invites to people individually, or they can also create a link that willing participants can click on to join.

Once they accept and all guests are accounted for, Elfster "draws" names and then emails your guests letting them know who they are buying for.

On that note, Teachstreet is like the Craigslist for learning — whether you want to be the teacher or the student.

I'm not as obsessive about my online calendars all the time as I wish I were — I would never forget about the occasional appointment or date I made on the fly. Even though I use calendars, sometimes you just need really straightforward reminders — which is what Deadline is great for.

For instance, I have a doctor appointment on my calendar, but what I really need is an alert a half hour before I need to leave for that appointment. I just need to add a deadline from the home screen, set the time and date, and make sure I set when I want to be notified by email so that I can get to my appointment on time (I set it to go off a half hour before). No more sheepish calls about why I'm not where I was supposed to be!

I have taken a fair amount of trips in my day, and from my extensive trip planning, I just assumed that all travel agents were created equal. Boy, was I wrong. There are plenty of websites now that use your likes to suggest new things you might like, but the simplicity of TasteKid and the fact that I don't have to register and fill in a ton of my likes has won me over. In some cases, it's freakishly smart. I put one of my favorite bands into the search bar and the TasteKid told me some bands I might like, which were approximately 30 artists from my iTunes library, even some of the more obscure ones. Well played, TasteKid.

Also, no matter the kind of media you put in the search bar, band, book, or movie — it'll suggest all those types based on one thing you like; so say if you enter The Decemberists into the bar, they'll give you other bands, plus movies and books that are somehow related to that genre. I think venting is a totally cathartic way to blow off some steam, but sometimes you don't want to do it aloud to your friends, coworkers, or significant other for fear that you'll be so negative that you bring them down. Which is why I'm glad I can turn to the Internet for this need! PeevePile is a site where you can anonymously (or not) post your biggest — and smallest — pet peeves.

I guarantee no one will comment on your peeve to tell you that you shouldn't waste your time worrying about things that small; instead there's a chorus of "Oh I KNOW"s.

Right now I'm in total agreement with the peeve of when people apologize by saying "I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings." That's not a real apology! Oh, I feel better now, don't you?

Thank You Too is a thank you e-card service with an old fashioned twist.

You select from a variety of short, but sweet messages like "You are beautiful. Thank you." or "You found me. Thank you." or "I love the way you turn the page. Thank you.", type out a personal message for the back of the card and the creators of the website re-write it by hand and send it off.

The cost for a simple postcard, handwriting service and postage is nearly $4, which last time I checked is actually less expensive than a fancy card.

Anyone not living under a rock these days usually goes to websites for hotels to stay in, but sometimes it's not enough to know that your hotel has a certain amount of stars before you go — don't you want to know about your room?

Trip Kick is the site that will tell you what rooms or floors to avoid for noise, traffic, or smoking, and will advise you which rooms are what you want, like corners with more space, so you can maximize your stay anywhere.

Trust me, you don't want to spend hundreds in a fancy hotel just to be on the ground floor facing some bodega's neon lights.

Finding it a huge headache to keep track of all of your mail from your email accounts and social networking sites? Then you've got to give Fuser a whirl. Fuser will actually organize all of your messages into one handy spot (like Gmail, for example). So say for instance you get a message sent to you on Facebook, it will appear right in your email account like a real email! And once you open it up, you can reply back (within your email) to return the message to your friend's wall or Facebook account. And they'll never know the difference. How great is that?

Search the relationship and/or hookup ads from Craigslist by seeing who's geographically closest to you. It's an admittedly unromantic idea, but hey, I'm not here to judge.

The two ideas had to merge at some point, right? Web 2.0 technology and anonymous lovin'. Like chocolate and peanut butter.

It may not be a story to tell your future grandkids, but by George it's efficient!

Now we can keep the original Polaroid dream alive thanks to a neat website and download called Poladroid! Mac OS X users (a Windows XP version is coming soon), just download the application on your computer, drag and drop your photos into the camera, wait a few seconds (like a real Polaroid cam), and then your retro-chic image should appear — utterly magical I tell ya. You can keep to pass along to friends, or upload high-res pics to the Polaroid cam and print them out for later . . . and then proceed to "shake it, shake it, shake it like a Polaroid picture." Oh what fun!

Website of the Day: Sit or Squat

Sit or Squat lives up to its name. The site shows you the closest place to relieve yourself and whether that place qualifies as a sitting or squatting spot. (You get what I mean, ladies?).

It's a fancier, more particular version of MizPee, which is a simple text service that finds the closest (and supposedly cleanest) toilet.

The Sit or Squat application was designed for the computer or for download on your iPhone (they are still working on BlackBerry), which means you can use it when you are on the go and really have to go. It functions worldwide and is based on Google Maps, but anyone can submit their favorite, or least favorite, throne. Now if I only knew which restrooms have full length mirrors . . .
