Wii Knee to Be the New Hot Video Game Injury

It's not going to be all eggnog and booze-related damage done this Christmas, if you plan on playing the Wii with your family over the holidays. Doctors have coined a new term for Wii-related injuries, "Wii Knee."

The doctors say these Wii-caused aches and pains (which, despite the name, can affect any body part) occurbecause certain Wii games (like the classic, Wii Sports) encourage people to mimic playing sports. Some people may not be used to exercise, or there may be older folks who try to keep up with their kids.

Either way, it's a bummer to be hurt by playing video games — which some of you can attest to. As for those who are unused to exercise, but don't want to miss out on the fun: Might I interest you in the Wii Fit?

Despite the economic downturn, tech toys like the Kindle and Nintendo Wii have sold out online and in stores across the country. Even with a 50 percent increase in Wii shipments, there's still a major shortage, with retailers like Wal-Mart resorting to a one-per-person purchasing cap limit.

In desperate need of a Wii this holiday season? Sites like eBay are offering the little white console for two-thirds more than you would pay at stores like Best Buy or Wal-mart — for a grand total of $310 for a new unit on eBay and $365 on Amazon. How does that make you feel?

Animal Crossing City Folk For the Wii: New Features, Still Cute

I'm obviously a big fan of Animal Crossing — having spent hours on end playing Wild World on my DS — I'm happy to say I've already put in some good time with Animal Crossing: City Folk, since its release on Sunday. It's the same game you know and love from before (which could be a good or bad thing, depending on how you look at it), but thankfully there are a few awesome new features on the Wii version that you won't find on any of the other consoles.

One of which is the Wii Speak adapter ($30) that lets you chat with others from around the world via your WiFi connection. Just attach the USB speaker into the Wii and you're off. But the coolest thing about this version has to be the DS import feature. Instead of making a brand new character in City Folk, you can transfer your town from your DS and start where you last left off. I'm totally stoked about that since I've upgraded my house quite a bit. Plus, working for Tom Nook to pay off my mortgage wasn't easy — who wants to start that all over again from scratch?

Animal Crossing City Folk is now available online ($50) or in stores. But here's a tip: pick the game and microphone bundle from Amazon for $70 — you'll save ten bucks!

Cozy Up Your Wiimotes and Nunchucks

Multiple remotes are the bane of my nesting existence. I'm excited whenever we get a new gadget or console, but when I see new remotes or controllers, I curse a little to myself.

These Remote Control Pockets for the Wii, just $8 each, are my first step to corralling my remote mess. The nunchucks and Wiimotes are cozied in there adorably, plus the organization factor is where it's at.

I think I'll take a cue from these and get other baskets to put on my coffee table for remotes. I'm already feeling better about my organizational skills!

Do You Like That Wii Music Doesn't Have Scores?

When I took Wii Music for a test drive last month, I was trying to figure out what I liked more (and less) about it than Rock Band. What I still haven't decided about is how I feel about the lack of scoring. They want you to "create" music and interpret songs in different ways, but it's not easy to get used to the fact that at the end of your round, you have no way to measure how you did. Amid reports that game sales are struggling, I wonder if this is what people don't "get" about the game, and if that's why Wii Music hasn't yet shown to be a threat to Rock Band yet. Aren't video games naturally about competition? Don't you get motivated to play a game by wanting to beat the next level or your own scores? On the other hand, maybe eliminating competition is a healthy thing, teaching us to have fun for fun's sake instead of everything being a competition. What do you think about Wii Music?Source

There are very few things that were made for each other. Peanut butter and jelly, milk and cookies, bananas and chocolate. But now, I think I've found a new pair. It's the newly released Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and the soon-to-be-released dreamGEAR Dual Glow Sabers. Let's be honest, how many hours did you spend as a kid battling it out Jedi style with your little bro? I personally preferred wrapping paper tubes as the light saber stand-in, but these are a Star Wars fan's dream come true. The best part? They're only $20 bucks.

And you don't have to use the sabers just on your Star Wars titles either. You can utilize them in any game that uses a slashing motion. But who has time for "other" games when we're only a month and a half away from Halloween? Although I could pick up the sassy Amidala costume, my hand made Leia costume is calling — and somehow, these will need to be incorporated. I'd better get to sewing.

Miis Sneak Their Way Into Guitar Hero World Tour

If you don't think you'll be able to break away from Guitar Hero long enough to check out Wii Music this October, but like the idea of seeing your Mii rock out on guitar then you, my friend, are in luck. The Wii version of the upcoming Guitar Hero World Tour will have a special game exclusive to Wii players called "Mii Freestyle" that lets you jam with a friend, and see your Mii playing along on screen.

Similar to the game's Music Studio mode, Mii Freestyle lets you pick and choose the notes you play (hence the whole freestyle concept), and you can even jam with the Nunchuck and Wiimote air-guitar style. Yes, you heard me, air guitar. I better get my game face on, stat!

Allez Cuisine! Iron Chefs Sign up For Wii Game

Nothing better than settling in late on Sunday night with a new episode of Iron Chef America (I know, I know, the original may be better, but I live for Bobby Flay and Mario Batali) and watching the venerable chefs and challengers dig in to some crazy secret ingredient. The excitement comes from the competition almost more than it does the exquisite-looking food — so it makes total sense that the show could be worked into a game for the Wii!

Additionally, Iron Chef America: Supreme Cuisine has added the voices and likenesses of Masaharu Morimoto and Batali (look at how adorable their little Miis are) to the Wii and Nintendo DS games. This takes my excitement level for this game from fair to major. If they add an Alton Brown avatar, it will hit excitement level: stupid.

Strong Bad's Cool Game For Attractive People Out Now!

You gotta know Homestar Runner, right? Well the Internet sensation and his pal Strong Bad have put out their very own PC and downloadable WiiWare game called Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People! Being released in a series of episodes, the first called "Homestar Ruiner" was released Monday and will cost you 1,000 Wii Points or $9 to download on your PC. You may wonder how HSR can possibly make a video game out of their letter answering, cartoon making, and milk snorting, but since I love Homestar Runner so, so much, I'm totally getting this, no questions asked.

The first episode starts with Strong Bad's plans to beat up Homestar Runner going awry, and somehow ends with an unwanted houseguest ruining his flow. Space Chimps Review: It's Fun Monkeying Around!

Remember the days of Super Mario where running, jumping, and spitting fireballs was the ultimate in fun? Space Chimps brings a bit of that nostalgia back, with this easy, breezy game based on the movie of the same name, but doesn't quite make it to Mario levels of awesome.

It's obvious that this title was aimed at the kiddie gamers with its endless life stock and simple controls, but I have to give Space Chimps credit — it is kinda fun. If you want to play a game that's easy on the mind (and not to bad to look at either). SC comes on a number of consoles including the Nintendo DS, which makes this a perfect game to shove in your kids' hands on car trips.

New Mario and Zelda Games Hitting the Wii

If you've been wondering what's next for the Wii after conquering Super Mario Galaxy and Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, then wonder no more. The E3 Summit kicked off this week, and the President of Nintendo, Satoru Iwata, revealed yesterday at a press event that new titles for both Mario and Zelda are in the works.

Iwata admitted there is a dire need for quality games like Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii, which I have to totally agree with, since the sub-par mass of third party games and movie tie-ins are getting a bit old. Although he didn't reveal any other info, I'm totally stoked already! Bring on more Mario!

Hospitals in Canada and the US to Get Fun Centers With Wiis

Here's a heartwarming story to put you in a good mood before the weekend. The Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation and Nintendo have teamed up to put Fun Centers featuring Wii gaming consoles in about 500 hospitals across the US and Canada by the end of the year, with 750 more to come later this year.

Fun Centers will not only come with a Wii and games like Super Mario Galaxy, Wii Sports and Mario Party 8, but will also feature a Sharp AQUOS flat screen TV and a DVD player. The Centers have been created to offer children an entertaining respite during difficult hospital stays. "We hope the new Fun Centers will give kids and their loved ones an opportunity to play, laugh and connect with each other amid trying circumstances," said Don James, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Operations.

One would assume that with over 24 million Nintendo Wii's sold worldwide, CNN news anchor Anderson Cooper would be up to speed with gaming console trends. Not so much. Wii Fit Fitness Journal: Week Three

My 30 day Wi Fit Fitness Challenge is fast approaching the home stretch, and I couldn't be happier with the results! In just three weeks, I'm down four pounds, which may not seem like a lot, but it's pretty awesome considering I stopped my usual routine of going to the gym and didn't change my eating habits. Although I might miss my goal of losing eight pounds, I think losing any inches (and getting closer to a healthier BMI) is a pretty good testament that the Wii Fit really does work.

I spent a ton of time getting down with Rhythm Boxing, and increased my aerobic fitness (surely at the dismay of my downstairs neighbors) with the Free Run this week. I'm not so enthused about jogging in the real world, but when it comes to running with Wii Fit, I'm a calorie burner! Who knew!? First Look at the Wii Fit and Rules for the Fitness Test

Yesterday, I hit the gym. . .I mean, the Wii Fit for a taste of what's to come in my 30 day Wii Fit Fitness Test. Although I wasn't expecting to break a sweat, I did have a nice dewy glow after trying out a few of the Wii Fit's features. My fave so far? Hula Hooping!

You may be wondering what rules I'll be setting for myself this month as I begin the 30 day Wii Fit Fitness Test. Don't hate me, but I've had my Wii since they first hit the shelves back in 2006. I've always thought of portable gaming systems like the Nintendo DS or Sony PSP as substitutes for the real thing. Don't get me wrong, I always slip my DS into my purse when I know I am going to have to wait for a plane, train or automobile, but it's just not as engaging and exciting as playing the game on a console like the Wii or Xbox. It's the big sound. It's the vibration. It's the big screen. When it comes to gaming, do you prefer one or the other or do you love them equally?

Portable. They are tiny, easy to play and fun.

Console. I like the big sound, picture, drama and more intense games.

Both. I love my DS, Wii, XBox and PSP, equally and don't expect them to measure up.

Mario Kart Wii Review: Another First Place Finish

I don't have to tell you that I'm a big time Nintendo fan, what with my DS always in tow, and all my Super Mario Bros paraphernalia that litters my bookshelves . . . oh, well, you probably haven't seen that, have you? Anyway, yesterday afternoon, the Nintendo stork dropped a sweet little box on my desk, and I didn't even have time to tell you since I literally "raced" home (get it — raced?) and started playing my copy of Mario Kart Wii! Yes, racing fans, I got the scoop on one of the hottest games to hit the shelves this Spring, and I just had to test it right away. Who wouldn't? As you might be able to tell, I was totally stoked to get the chance to play MKW early, since there is a special place in my heart for racers. But seriously, Mario Kart Wii is just as fun as you'd imagined.

When I first opened the box, the first thing I noticed was that the Wii Wheel was smaller than I expected, but still fits nicely into your hands. It might even fit into your eight year old's hands, if you'd let them have a turn, that is! But unfortunately, the pack only comes with one wheel, so you should keep an eye out for additional ones so you can play nicely with others. After popping in the disk, inserting my Wiimote into the wheel, and doing a little Mario jig, I was ready to race. Lost Winds Coming to WiiWare

First previewed at this year's Game Developers Conference, Lost Winds will be a title to watch out for on the Wii in the upcoming months. Although I'm totally looking forward to the much hyped Grand Theft Auto IV, I do like a nice, friendly Nintendo game to have some fun with. Lost Winds has you playing as Taku as you navigate your way through the world of Mistralis. In this world, you are trying to find and piece together shards of a spirit stone with the help of the wind called Enril, which you also have control over. Using the nunchuck to direct Taku, and the Wiimote to aim Enril's breezes, you not only help Taku jump, but can push over rocky obstacles, light torches and spray water.

OK, so it seems to be a fun and interesting puzzle game, but it's totally pretty, right?! I love little Taku and his cape, plus it kind of reminds me of Zelda. Lost Winds doesn't yet have a release date, but word has it that it will be out on WiiWare very soon. Check out more screens when you

Diane Sawyer Wii Skiing: A Must See

Looks like the lovely get fit and have fun Wii Fit will be making its way to store shelves sooner than its expected May 19 release and here's to hoping I can kiss my gym membership goodbye! Said to be priced at $90, (Wii Balance Board included), the Wii Fit may just be your ticket to that summer beach bod you've desperately been trying to achieve — well maybe not. After watching Diane Sawyer and the rest of the Good Morning America crew take the Wii Fit for a test drive, I don't think I saw a drop of sweat or anything that resembled a serious workout. Watch the vid below and tell me if you think this is going to be a calorie burner or not? I say not so much, but then again, maybe "fake skiing" will do a body good?!

It Took a Lot of Tries to Wii-Invent the Wii Wheel

With Mario Kart for the Wii hitting store shelves April 27, I'm already getting my engine revved up and am dying to get my hands on a Wii Wheel (which just so happens to come with the game!). A wheel is a wheel is a wheel right? Not exactly. When Mario Kart Wii creators were asked about the development of Mario Kart Wii, they said that there were 30 different prototype Wii Wheels before they got just the right wheel design. . . as some were not white, and some were not perfectly round. Senior Takes Part in Wiihabilitation

I already knew that senior citizens would rather play the Wii over bridge, but did you know that Wiihabilitation is also taking the country by storm? For James Mann, a patient at Wake Med Health Park in Raleigh, N.C., playing the Nintendo Wii is not only a great source of fun, but it's also helping him recover from a stroke. Shown here with recreational therapist Elizabeth Penny (see pics below), James takes part in games of Wii baseball to help him with his balance, coordination and the strengthening of his arms — how great is this?! And as soon as I get my hands on Wii Fit, I'll be working on my abs, butt and thighs!

Get Your Game On: April Releases

The time has come for the start of the video game "dry" season. . . a gaming drought, if you will. Although there are a few games being released this month that are worthy of your time and cash - like one of my April Must Haves: Mario Kart – truth be told, some are just filler until we get to the next batch of great games. Fortunately, we had a huge Winter, and my console is still humming to the likes of Rock Band, Mass Effect (will I ever get the time to finish!?), and of course Super Mario Galaxy. Would You Rent a Wii at a Hotel?

The Westin hotel chain is going to start offering Wiis for free to hotel guests — upgrade! I got so excited when I read that they would be renting the awesome consoles (one less thing to pack), but I also learned that Le Parker Meridien will be charging $50 an hour to rent a Wii! It makes sense have complimentary Wiis, like the Westin, but to have to pay?! Nuts! Westin offering the Wii definitely makes this geek want to choose them the next time I travel, instead of being resigned to carrying it in my bowling bag travel case. What about you? Would you rent a Wii at your hotel?Source

Mario Kart Wii Coming April 27

For those of you waiting oh so impatiently for the Wii edition of Mario Kart, you'll have to hold your breath for only another month. Mario Kart Wii will be hitting shelves on April 27 here in the states, but lucky Japanese Wii fans can get their hands on it a whole two weeks and some odd days earlier. I hope we don't have a repeat of the delayed Super Smash Bros. Brawl release where it gets pushed back at the very last minute! I just don't know if my little heart could stand it.

Thankfully, Mario Kart Wii is coming stocked with the Wii Wheel (cause who would want to drive with the Wiimote? Not me!), although there's already sightings of some pretty impressive third-party steering wheels out there. Plus, this time we can race motorcycles and compete online with up to 12 players worldwide. Can't wait for some sweet Mario Kart action? Check out the trailer below when you
