Eye-Fi Gets iPhone App and YouTube Uploading

If you haven't heard of Eye-Fi cards before, they are SD cards that allow you to upload your digital pictures computer wirelessly over your WiFi network. I love them so much, I just had to include them in my January Must Haves list.

Well Eye-Fi has just announced a new iPhone application, so you can instantly send your iPhone pics to your laptop or put them on your favorite photo-sharing site. Additionally, they will soon be offering automatic uploading direct to YouTube and service to support HD videos. Just when you thought they couldn't get any more useful, right?

On Wednesday eve, when most of you were probably ringing in the New Year with champagne and noisemakers, YouTube was showcasing 24 of their highest-rated and most memorable videos of 2008. I sometimes wonder how different my childhood would have been if technology had been as ingrained in my life as it is now. Thankfully, I didn't get a computer until I was 14, so I wasn't that "connected," so to speak, until I was in my teens. But roll back the clock on YouTube, say 23 years, and this is what you get.

Thank goodness for online convenience (and privacy) in the 21st century!

Virgin America's New Inflight WiFi and YouTube Live Event

OK, I promised you a full recap about my event-filled Saturday — the flight, the WiFi test drive, and the YouTube Live Event — and here it is! Testing out Virgin America's first WiFi enabled plane with Gogo Inflight Internet among other tech enthusiasts was a rush in itself, but heading to the first official YouTube Live event here in San Francisco was icing on the cake to a spectacular day. I've got quite the geeky day planned, and I had to share my excitement with guys! First, I'm packing my bags and heading to San Francisco International Airport to board a Virgin America plane — I'm not really going anywhere, per se, but the short flight will be showing off GoGo's new in-flight WiFi! Then afterward, drum roll please — I am hitting up the YouTube Live event!

At SFO, I'll board a Virgin Airlines plane — already my fave airline for its awesome techy features — and test out the in-flight Wifi on a special beta flight.

Afterward, it's off the to the YouTube Live Event, to celebrate YouTube's new webcasting feature, where I'll hopefully rub elbows with Will.i.am and Katy Perry, to name a few! Stay tuned for my recap on how it all turns out!

YouTube Takes the Plunge Into Live Webcasting

Some days (when I have time), I'll get a pretty great ab workout from all the laughs I find on YouTube. Some of my friends think it's the best invention since Cheetos — and it looks like they're about to get even better. Not only is YouTube calling itself the "world's largest video discovery platform", but it's also dipping its toes into the pool of live webcasting; starting with their inaugural YouTube Live event taking place here in San Francisco on November 22.

The huge two hour webcast will host YouTube vets Katy Perry, Will.i.Am, Esmee Denters, along with performances by other well known YouTube users. Does the name Tay Zonday ring any bells? I thought so. But I'm betting the highlight of the evening will be going down at the post-show party somewhere around the Guitar Hero kiosks. Musicians and geeks in one room? You know there will be some serious shredding taking place!

The Internet can provide a wealth of knowledge these days, but sometimes I find that the news can get a little jumbled. Like searching YouTube for videos relating to the presidential election — although you can sort by when videos were uploaded (today, this week, or this month) things are still out of order and shown by how many views, not by latest video uploaded. I want up-to-the-minute results!

Which is why I think this latest YouTube mashup is pretty cool. Brought to us by Dipity, TimeTube lets you check out uploaded videos on a timeline so you never miss a beat. You can search any subject under the sun and TimeTube will show you videos dating back up to 500 years! Did YouTube exist back then? I didn't think so.

This has got to be the best news I've heard all week! YouTube is now streaming 15 50-minute episodes of geeky classic TV shows like Star Trek, MacGyver and, wait for it — Beverly Hills 90210! Once you click on a show, you can decide whether you want to watch it in Theater View with the surrounding LED light on or off. It's pretty cool, and hopefully just the beginning of what's yet to come!

YouTube Ordered to Shell Out Viewer Info

If you've ever checked out YouTube clips from The Daily Show and The Colbert Report (among many others), your information may soon be released to Viacom — they've been granted access to private user data to find out how many people are watching!

Part of a copyright infringement lawsuit, Google was ordered to release the deets about how many times copyrighted clips are played, and who's watching to determine if damages are owed to Viacom.

Viacom claims that Google knew about the infringements and could do more to stop it. Although the Goog was opposed to handing over the 12 terabytes of data (that's a lot), saying that info should be kept private, Viacom assures us that they will proceed with caution. Here's more:

Any data provided will be used exclusively for the purpose of proving our case against YouTube and Google (and) will be handled subject to a court protective order and in a highly confidential manner.

Thoughts of anonymity and identity theft come to my paranoid mind when companies are forced to hand over user information, but does this case make you think twice before using YouTube if your info and viewing history (no matter how delicately handled) are available for others to see? Turn Your YouTube Vids into Your Own Pop-Up Videos

Oh how I miss my old Saturday afternoon VH-1 standby. . .Pop-Up Video. Learning interesting (and somewhat useless) facts about my favorite music videos always made those lazy days pass with ease. If you were a big fan of the pop-up bubbles that danced in your screen right along with Rick Astley's hips, then you'll love the newest feature on YouTube: Video Annotations.

Despite the boring name, you can make your own pop-up hit with that video you uploaded last week starring you and your buddies LARPing it out in the woods. Control the length, size, and duration that the note boxes appear on the screen for as many useless facts you can provide. Unfortunately, you'll have to do without the bubble popping sound for now. But hopefully they'll add that feature soon, cause it's just not the same without it.

Weezer's Geekalicious Video: Geekish or Freakish?

With the new Weezer album cover getting some flack for being a little weird, I have to say that when it comes to their tunes, I'm still a fan. "Pork and Beans" is not only the standout track from their new record, it's also the one song that holds true to their signature sound. And since their album is hitting shelves on June 3, it's only fitting that these guys release a new (and ubergeeky) video.

I'm a sucker for listening to all my new favorite songs on YouTube, so when I saw this neat tip on Lifehacker, I wanted to share it with all of you! To get started you'll need Firefox and this Greasemonkey extension. The Googlesystem Blog explains that this Greasemonkey script creates a section titled "lyrics" below the video's description, and will display them when expanded (you'll notice different lyrics services for the song). So now when you see Scarlett Johansson's new music video, you'll be able to sing along!

TiVo Users to Get YouTube Access

Starting later this year, Series 3 and TiVo HD subscribers will be able to access YouTube videos directly from their TVs via their TiVo DVRs. Considering YouTube is rolling out HD videos, this may be a step in the right direction. But then again, with Hulu going public today, most of us will be able to catch all our favorite shows directly online, for free. Either or, I'm not going to complain about the ever-expanding options!

Be Thankful For Your Country, They Let You Have YouTube

The Pakistani government has banned access to YouTube due to anti-Islamic videos being posted on the site by various users. The entire site, and not just the offending users or clips, have been blocked until further notice. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority urged users to write to YouTube to take down the videos, but unless they do, YouTube will remain blocked.

Turkey also blocked YouTube in January in the face of a film that insulted the country's founding father (it's illegal to do so in Turkey). And it doesn't end there — both Thailand and Morocco have banned YouTube because of videos that were critical of their countries' leaders.

It seems so unfair and misguided for YouTube to suffer as a host rather than the actual videos and users that spurred the banning, doesn't it? I can't imagine being blocked from my favorite websites by my government, so it goes to show — don't forget to vote.

YouTube Unveils a New Mobile Service

One of the things I love doing on my iPhone is watching YouTube videos, but I always feel like site navigation isn't the easiest task. The New York Times just announced that YouTube has launched a new mobile application at m.youtube.com that will help users access YouTube's millions of videos via a much cleaner interface, for free.

CrunchGear points out that you'll also be able to subscribe to certain channels as well as upload videos — all directly from your mobile device!

MacBook Air Commercial Celebrates Its Thinnovation

Queen Elizabeth II Launches Her Own YouTube Channel

She may be Britain's oldest queen, but Queen Elizabeth II sure knows how to keep up with younger generations. Following in the footsteps of television queen Oprah, Queen Elizabeth, who recently turned 81, has launched her own Royal Channel on YouTube.

She used the new channel to send out her 50th annual televised Christmas message on Dec. 25. USA Today reports on a statement they received from Buckingham Palace.

"The queen always keeps abreast with new ways of communicating with people. The Christmas message was podcast last year...She has always been aware of reaching more people and adapting the communication to suit. This will make the Christmas message more accessible to younger people and those in other countries."

While the channel is a tad behind the times (the creator disabled the embed code so people can't share the videos virally on the web) I know I'll be tuning in for glimpses of Prince William.

iMac Concept Video Spreads Holiday Cheer

Reminiscent of Hollywood Squares, this light animated concept commercial was created by Mark Richardson of Ragus Media. The video showcases thirty iMacs getting festive to some holiday tunes—quite impressive for us Mac geeks! According to Gizmodo, Richardson added in the light effects with Maxwell Render (a light simulator), which allowed for manipulation in real time on the production system, a quad core Mac Pro. Watch and be amazed, it's the perfect Christmas treat!

Santa Makes a Cameo in a Mac vs. PC Ad

Oprah Unveils Her Own YouTube Channel

On Friday, Oprah revealed her latest project—her own YouTube Channel. The new channel already includes teasers for upcoming shows, behind-the-scenes footage and a sneak peek at Tuesday's show which will officially reveal her YouTube debut. The unveiling show will include appearances by YouTube founders Steve Chen and Chad Hurley, plus infamous "youtubers" like Tyson the skateboarding dog. According to Valleywag, The Oprah Show grabs 5 million viewers daily, so it will be interesting to see how much of her fans will watch her new Vlogs. Way to go O! The Massage Me Game Controller Jacket

If you have a gamer friend or boyfriend, you may be able to convince them to massage you with one of these. The "Massage Me Jacket" is basically a game controller inside a vest—yes you can make one yourself. Discussed on Kotaku, this jacket requires two people to use it—the gaming masseur and the person wearing the jacket who receives the back rub. How it works: The neoprene jacket includes pressure-sensitive sensors embedded inside it. These sensors will send signals to a game pad that has been tweaked to work with certain video games. Hey, if it takes a gaming jacket for people to get excited about giving massages, maybe it's not too wacky after all!

Anssi Vanhala Solves Rubik's Cube With His Feet

I can barely solve a rubik's cube with my hands, so the thought of trying to line-up colors with my feet is totally out of the question! Definitely not the case for Anssi Vanhala of Finland who won the feet-only challenge at the Rubik's Cube World Championship in Hungary this past weekend. Want proof? Check out the video below which I found on Spluch of Vanhala breaking the Unofficial World Record of solving the 3x3 cube in only 49.33 seconds. I wonder what his secret is...strong feet or maybe extra long toes? Vanhala's skills are just as impressive and mind-blowing as the extraordinary Tetris gamer!

David Pogue Reviews the Amazing $100 Laptop

Back in March we discussed a new initiative called the One Laptop Per Child project which is aiming to provide low-cost OX laptops to children in developing nations. According to CNN Money, the OLPC already has around 7,000 machines in demonstration projects in about fifteen countries including Cambodia, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, and Rwanda. We've heard alot about this project in the past few months, but now we actually get to see it in action thanks to New York Times technology columnist David Pogue. In this video below which was featured on Gizmodo, you'll get an eye-opening review of the $100 laptop (actually $188 laptop to be exact) and learn about all its incredible features. Tina Fey Talks to Conan About Her Geek Monthly Appearance

Last week, I couldn't help but show off Tina Fey's organizational skils and discuss her extensive Star Wars knowledge. On a recent episode of "Late Night with Conan O'Brien", Tina talked about gracing the cover of Geek Monthly, while funny man Conan insisted he is the biggest geek and should have been the cover. When questioned about her 'geekiness,' Fey claimed that she had a collection of Star Wars figures as a kid and while other children were out on dates, she'd be at home taking care of all her action figures. As you already know, Wii gaming is very popular among seniors, with Wii bowling being a top favorite! Here is a video from Erickson Sports, which showcases some highlights from game one of the first annual "Erickson Sports Nintendo Wii Bowling Championship." I just love anything related to Wii playing and seniors. It warms my heart and tickles my toes. I guarantee that once you watch this video, you'll get a huge smile on your face. The iPod Touch Gets The Ultimate Scratch Test

Ever since I became the proud owner of an Apple iPhone, I've gone to great measures to make sure the screen stays protected from scratches.

Now I'm not exactly sure if the iPod Touch has the same screen exterior as the iPhone, but if it does I think it's safe to say that I don't have to worry about scratching my phone. This awesome video, which I spotted on techfresh, demonstrates the durability of the new iPod Touch's screen as it resists damage from keys, a pin and even a razor blade—proving that the screen is not as fragile as one might think. As for smudges, that's a whole other story!

After realizing most of the videos on YouTube are low quality and plot-less, Alexandra Juhasz, who is a media studies professor at Pitzer College in Claremont, California, decided the phenomena needed to be studied. Juhasz has created a course she calls "Learning from YouTube," which allows Pitzer students to take a better look at the content posted on the site. Professor Juhasz and her students meet in a real class room, but most of the content of the course is available virtually on its "Learning From YouTube" channel. YouTube is "a phenomenon that should be studied," student Darren Grose told Newsvine. "You can learn a lot about American culture and just Internet culture in general." I think it's a fun idea, but do you think any of the content on YouTube is really college credit worthy?

Geek Tip: Saving YouTube Videos In Many Formats

With so many extraordinary videos on TeamSugar and YouTube, I often wish I could watch certain ones on my iPod. Thanks to a service called vConvert, I can now take any video off the net and quickly convert it to popular formats like wmv, mov, mp4, mp3, 3gp etc. Just type in the URL and choose which application you would like to convert the video for from the user-friendly menu. Once converted you can download the file to your desktop. The techies at lifehacker also note that vConvert can just convert the audio to an mp3 as well...hello new songs on YouTube!

Has YouTube Gone Too Far With Graphic Videos?

With thousands of videos being posted on YouTube daily, it's practically impossible for each video to be watched before it is made available online, making it easier for people to publish graphic, violent or obscene material. BBC News, has noted that police chiefs are now urging websites like YouTube to remove violent video footage of children fighting. They argue that YouTube and Google should be filtering material before it is posted. YouTube claims that this would be censorship and is not the role of a private company - they currently rely on their users to flag videos inappropriate when they deem necessary. In a poll conducted by Switched entitled "Should YouTube filter child-fight videos before they're posted?" More than 70 percent of respondents agreed that they should be. YouTube: YouTube is a great site to upload videos because it's free and you can tag and comment on videos. Personally, I love it because it has extensive privacy options so you can keep your videos private and prevent them from being copied. You can assign people to a friends or family contact list, or create additional ones. Then whenever you upload videos, you can decide which list you want to make it available to. The only downfall is the ten minute limit on uploaded clips. But then again, you could do the videos in segments by doing part one, part two, etc.
Jumpcut: Jumpcut is fun because you can actually edit your videos online. Jumpcut's online editor is very easy and lets you add and arrange content in your video by dragging and dropping thumbnails, by selecting the best parts of your video clips, changing the duration of your images, add music or sound effects, choose transitions, add titles, cool effects etc. Just like YouTube, you can select who you want to see your videos.
Other sites with similar features include: ifilm, clipshack and LiveVideo.

Over Eight Billion Streamed Videos Watched In May

The results are in folks. ComScore, which does internet research measuring, just released the results from the Video Metrix report for May 2007. The data reveals that the average American watched more than 2.5 hours of online streaming video during that month. Have people kissed their TV watching good-bye? Here are some more interesting stats related to these findings:

Nearly three out of four (74.3 percent) U.S. Internet users streamed video online.

More than one out of three (35 percent) U.S. Internet users streamed video on YouTube.

The average video stream duration was 2.5 minutes.

The average online video viewer consumed 63 video streams, or more than two per day.

Vintage Geek: First Cell Phone Commercial

I can't decide which is worse- the first ever e-mail ad or the first cell phone commercial from 1989 shown below. Both definitely deserve vintage geek awards, but I'd have to say that this hilarious video which was posted on adfreak is downright over the top! I'll try not to spoil it, but in forty-three seconds there's time for a swim, jeep ride, mini safari and boat ride. Come on, that is nothing compared to what the iPhone can do!

Baby Thinks Wii Is Pretty Funny

Just when I think I've almost had enough of the Wii, I am reminded just how great it is. You have to see how this adorable baby boy reacts as he watches his dad play the Nintendo Wii - his laughter is infectious and too cute for words! Either he knows something we don't or he's going to be the next best Wii golf player ever. I'd say this one is a near match for the infamous geeky girl going wild video!
