A surprising form of stress from stuff that is supposed to be fun!

Occasionally, they boost your vocabulary.

True story: When I started dating my boyfriend, he Googled me, only to find someone with the same name as me who wrote awful amateur love poetry. Luckily, he liked me enough to see past the terrible poems — at least until he told me he saw my poems, and I explained that I merely had a Googleganger!

Definition: Ringtone Nostalgia

The condition whereby you fly into a frenzy to find your ringing cell phone, only to find that it has not, in fact, been ringing at all; what you have heard is a phone with your former ringtone. Highly disconcerting.

Definition: Favicon

Favicon is the name of one of those things where you know what it is, you just don't know what it's called (like the thingie that holds the ends of your shoelaces together).

A favicon, or a web icon or urlicon, is the little icon that appears on the URL bar to the left. Google just updated theirs, and I've compiled the favicons for the Sugar sites here.

I get a certain delight when I see a favicon I haven't seen before because it just adds creativity and a great little detail to your website or blog!

Definition: Geotagging

Verb

Geotagging, (sometimes referred to as Geocoding), is the process of adding geographical identification metadata to various media such as websites, RSS feeds, or images. This data usually consists of latitude and longitude coordinates, though it can also include altitude and place names.

Geotagging was once a feature reserved to the most extreme Flickr and online photo community addicts, but it turns out it's proving helpful to even the average geek. If images are geotagged you can easily find images taken near a given location by entering a latitude and longitude into a Geotagging-enabled image search engine. This makes finding news, websites, or even restaurants and tourist attractions much easier.

For an additional example check out how geotagging can help you plan your vacation.

Definition: Bacn

You probably know what Bacn is, you just don't know it yet. Bacn is a new problem filling all our e-mail inboxes - it's the e-mail you receive that isn’t spam and isn’t personal mail.

According to the folks at Bacn 2, it’s notifications of a new post to your Facebook wall or a new follower on Twitter. It’s the Google alert for your name and the newsletter from your favorite company. Sure, you want to know if the cute guy from the gym found you on Twitter so you can log in and comment back, but that Bacn you received after his comment is clogging up your inbox and inadvertently making you hate him already.

In most cases you can opt out of receiving Bacn, but then we wouldn't have anything to complain about, would we?

Definition: Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)

A liquid crystal display (often referred to as LCD) is a thin, flat display device made up of any number of color or monochrome pixels arrayed in front of a light source or reflector. Engineers like it because it uses very small amounts of electric power, and is therefore suitable for use in battery-powered electronic devices.

LCDs are not susceptible to burn-in and are common in gadgets like laptop computers, digital clocks and watches, microwave ovens and CD players.

Definition: RSS Feed

Noun

An RSS (Really Simple Syndication) Feed is the information that gets syndicated in your RSS Reader. You can get a website's RSS Feed by clicking on the feed button, which is usually orange and displayed in the right hand side of your browser's address bar or on a site's homepage.

RSS is the format that web sites and blogs can use to send updated headlines to services like Google Reader or Bloglines. It gathers the content you select from a variety of sources and displays it for you in one convenient location.

RSS is a relatively new format, so not all sites syndicate their content.

Definition: RSS Reader

Noun

An RSS (Really Simple Syndication) Reader is a web feed aggregator, also known as a feed reader, that aggregates syndicated web content such as news headlines, blogs, podcasts, and vlogs in a single location for easy viewing.

Examples of popular RSS Readers include Google Reader, Netvibes, Bloglines and My Yahoo's RSS feature. Once you have decided which Reader you are going to use, you sign up for an account and then look for RSS Reader buttons on your favorite sites and blogs (they are usually orange). You click on those buttons to add content to RSS Reader. It will update throughout the day, giving you the latest content from your favorite sites.

Why are RSS Readers great? They reduce the time and effort you'll have to extend checking your favorite websites for updates. Once you are subscribed to a feed, an aggregator is able to check for new content at user-determined intervals and retrieve the update. Also you can easily unsubscribe from a feed if you get tired of a site.

Still confused? Check out RSS Explained the Oprah Way for more help.
