Do "iPhone Killers" Make You Think Twice?

Although I can appreciate new phones hitting the market with labels like "iPhone Killer," it really doesn't make me think twice about my decision to buy an iPhone. I'm pretty well immersed in a Mac world — my work and home computers are both Macs — so for me, it only made sense to get a phone made by Apple. I, of course, didn't bat an eye when Nokia announced the N9, its own version of the "iPhone Killer", that boasts all the same goodies the iPhone has, plus a far superior Zeiss 5-megapixel camera (with video capabilities), 32GB of memory (expandable to 48GB with SD card), and a sliding QWERTY keyboard. I must admit that I know plenty of iPhone heads that were turned by tech temptation. Do so-called "iPhone Killers" make you think twice about your purchase?

Griffin's Clarifi Case Improves the iPhone's Camera

As a photography nut, I'd never give up my camera for the one on my phone, but that doesn't mean that I don't constantly snap candids with my iPhone. Of course, it could be a better camera, but I wouldn't have dreamed it was so easy to improve it and protect it at the same time!

Griffin's Clarifi Case ($35) does much more than keep your phone safe from scratches; its built-in close-up lens covers the iPhone's lens, while enhancing the details and colors in your pictures.

Check out Griffin's side-by-side examples of photos taken with just the iPhone, and then one taken with the case. Pretty big difference, I'd say.

It's great for apps that read your pictures, scanning documents to email, and even just for taking the odd photo — who doesn't want a better camera phone?

I've been able to improvise when I need one, but these DIY instructions on how to make your own cardboard iPhone dock have made my day.

Apple Hits 10,000 Apps: How Many Do You Have?

An avid iPhone app watch site has reported that Apple has reached a huge milestone — a grand total of 10,000 apps (or thereabouts, they concede).I certainly feel like I've looked at 10,000 apps and tested out nearly that many, but when it comes down to it, I edit quite harshly on my iPhone. I have honed it down to ones that I absolutely need or love, and get rid of those that are really just novelties and fun for a day.Even so, I still have about 40 essential apps on my iPhone (and that number looks to increase, since I'm crazy for new cool ones); so share with me — how many do you have?

What's a fab life in the city without an easy way to make restaurant reservations?

OpenTable, the website that made my life easier years ago when they let me make online reservations for dining out pleased me again a few months ago when it became mobile-browser friendly, but it has outdone itself this time with an iPhone App of the same name.

It's free and does just what the website does — and is actually even better, because it can utilize the iPhone's GPS and tell you the nearest 20 restaurants!

Fingerless Gloves: The Cold Weather Touchscreen Solution!

Each week my coats seem to get a little thicker as the temperature drops, and soon it'll be time to bundle up. My pet peeve of the cold weather is trying to press buttons on the iPod and otherwise use my iPhone's touchscreen while keeping my hands warm in gloves.

A few Winters ago, I got used to just taking off my gloves when I needed to use the clickwheel (or, I'm not proud to admit, using a pair of gloves with a hole in the forefinger) on my iPod.

But this time, I'll be ready! I'm conquering the touchscreen/glove dilemma by getting into fingerless gloves. My faves are these Preference Gloves from Anthropologie that have a mitten attachment, so you're not constantly looking like a posh punk. Unless that's what you're going for.

I've raved about the text messaging reminders, and the fact that you can create custom lists and share them with others, which has made my life so much easier. Especially since I have trouble remembering when to take the trash out. Well . . . sometimes.

Steve Jobs is going to be ho-ho-hoing himself all the way to the bank this holiday season because Apple has sold a total of 13 million iPhones to date with a whopping 6.89 just in the last quarter of this year!

There's no denying the success of this glorious gizmo — heck, if Liz Lemon upgrades, there's no telling how high sales will get! Not only is the iPhone the top-selling smartphone of all time, but it is the second best-selling mobile handset in the US as well, with one in three iPhone purchasers switching phone carriers to become AT&T subscribers. Who came in second? Motorola's Razr 3. Other top-selling smartphones this year include the BlackBerry Curve (second place), BlackBerry Pearl (third place), and Palm Centro (fourth place).

Hot New Games Hitting Your iPod Touch and iPhone This Fall

Yesterday, I got an early look at the newest games slated to hit the iPod Touch and iPhone this Fall and Winter. I was pretty impressed with the graphics and low learning curve it took just to pick up and play these newest games, but to be honest, they're going to have to compete with Spore Origins for my coveted iPhone play time! New titles include an awesome mobile version of Need for Speed, which looked like a blast to play, as well as a cute platformer called Rolando that has your character rolling along a course, which was totally reminiscent of the super-cute PSP game I loved called LocoRoco.

But my favorite of this batch had to be a Tetris inspired title that has you stacking blocks to reach a goal — simple, yet addictive. But unlike Tetris, you have the accelerometer to deal with, so you have to keep it steady! It's called Topple, and it looks like it would take up plenty of those free minutes I accumulate on the bus! Thankfully, Topple is available now in the App Store for 99 cents, so I can get my game on today!

When a new smartphone comes out, one of the first things I look for is whether it has a touchscreen keyboard or a physical keyboard. When T-Mobile's G1 came out, I was mildly surprised that it was physical, rather than onscreen, because I thought it may be closer in design to the iPhone.Not to be outdone, it looks like Android will devise an onscreen keyboard for the G1 as well, leaving you with both options to type. Nice compromise!In the meantime, tell me which one you prefer, since I know that becoming accustomed to the physical keys of a phone like the BlackBerry deterred a lot of people from the iPhone because of its touchscreen. What do you like to type on?

Fans of retro styling and modern electronics, this one's for you: The 99-cent Flip Clock app is an adorable vintage clock that, yes, flips like an actual old flip clock to tell you the time.

It's probably easier to just read the clock on your iPhone's home screen, but I quite like the idea of propping your phone up with Flip Clock on and just pretending it's your actual clock. Without the loud flipping sound.

Sit or Squat lives up to its name. The site shows you the closest place to relieve yourself and whether that place qualifies as a sitting or squatting spot. (You get what I mean, ladies?).

It's a fancier, more particular version of MizPee, which is a simple text service that finds the closest (and supposedly cleanest) toilet.

The Sit or Squat application was designed for the computer or for download on your iPhone (they are still working on BlackBerry), which means you can use it when you are on the go and really have to go. It functions worldwide and is based on Google Maps, but anyone can submit their favorite, or least favorite, throne. Now if I only knew which restrooms have full length mirrors . . .

Do you live in fear of speeding tickets? I no longer drive, but when I did, they were the bane of my existence. Too bad I wasn't a driver in the time of the iPhone, because Trapster is the latest app that I'm declaring brilliant.

With this free app, the theory is that you, as the driver (though I'd make the person riding shotgun do it for safety's sake), will just tap the app's map (which is following you via GPS) to report a cop car hiding out with his radar gun.

Reported cop car/radar gun sightings go to a database, which alerts other drivers with the app in the area that they should watch out. Verrrry sneaky.

Dahlia's Lipstick Jungle iPhone Case

iPhone spotting is my favorite Wednesday night sport when I'm watching Lipstick Jungle. Even though the gadget situation started off rocky at the beginning of the first season, it now appears that all the characters went on one big shopping trip to Apple to buy iPhones (first-gen ones though, maybe they got them on Craigslist?)

Since I love the way these girls dress and accessorize, I'd like to see them sporting some chic laptop bags and phone cases, but I am pleased to see that Dahlia (played by the fabulous Rosie Perez), Victory's new publicist, has a silicone case on her iPhone. I thought it was clear at first, but now I'm pretty sure it's smoke, like this one from Overstock. These aren't too fancy, but they're inexpensive, easy protection — this one is only $6. Yay to recessionistas!

By no means am I saying that just because she's a celebrity that she needs to follow in the footsteps of other famous females and upgrade to the 3G. Actually, it's kinda refreshing to see a celeb stick out their cell phone selection for more than just a few months. So maybe the iPhone doesn't have GPS, 3G network access, or come in a sleek black or white plastic encasing, but it's tried, tested, and true — gotta love originals!

With the sexy new BlackBerry Storm making its debut in November on the Verizon network, any early releases of pictures, and certainly videos, are always a treat. Watching RIM's first BlackBerry Storm commercial brought me back to Summer of 2007, when all we could think about was June 29 — the day Apple's iPhone hit store shelves. I decided to put the first iPhone commercial and now RIM's first BlackBerry Storm commercial side-by-side to see which one appeals to you more. Maybe I'm just biased because the Storm ad is new, but I find the music edgier, the colors brighter and it's just a lot livelier. Do you think the Storm ad makes it look more appealing than the iPhone?

How soon? As early as an announcement as 2009's MacWorld event.Since most of my friends and family who want to switch to an iPhone but haven't blame being in a Verizon contract, I know many of them will be stoked to hear this news and start gearing up for a switch. As a geek, I may not shy away from math, but in a store, holding a hot dress on sale with nothing but a price tag and a 15-percent-off sign hovering over it, I start to panic a little. "Quick, how much is that?!" I ask whomever I'm shopping with. For some reason, I need sale prices right now in order to make a decision.

Solving my panicky retail problem is the iPhone App onSale!, which has you enter the item's original price, the discount percentage, any additional discount, and even the tax so you get an accurate prediction of what you'll pay at the register.

This app costs a dollar, but will save you precious shopping time, and you can't put a price on that.

Geek Tip: Stream Radio on Your iPhone For Free

One thing I love about the iPhone is choice. I can pick which apps I want or don't want on my phone — no one is telling me that I have to use one or the other. I also love that you can get some of the best apps for free. Take Pandora for example — I'm totally bummed about the news that they may go under — but it's by far one of my favorite free music-streaming programs, iPhone or not.

So I was equally excited when I found FlyCast, an app that lets you stream radio stations from all across the country. I can listen to KEXP – my go-to station for indie music – and a thousand others wherever I have a connection. You can pause live radio, and it runs in the background so you can still surf the Internet or check your mail while it's playing. Plus, FlyCast is free! This really is a win-win situation here.

One of the announcements at the Let's Rock presentation last week was the iPhone 2.1 update. Steve Jobs boasted that this update will improve your reception, cut down on dropped calls, and exterminate system bugs. After spending about 30 minutes updating my firmware, I can tell you that it's a vast improvement! I have all five bars almost everywhere I go in the city, and have noticed faster Internet surfing, faster downloads, and best of all — faster backups to iTunes. Have you updated your iPhone yet?

OK, OK, I know that the iPhone has its drawbacks. No video capabilities, no camera flash, and certainly no camera zoom. I knew these downsides and decided to dive into the Apple pool anyway. So is this Camera Telescope for your first-gen iPhone a savior, or is it just putting a Band-Aid on a bigger problem?

Adding a 6X zoom to your iPhone would be a nice addition, but you'd run the risk of looking like a total dork with that telescope sticking out the back of your sleek handheld. But of course, for $18, it might be worth it for those times you're stalking a celebrity from your corner table at the Ivy. I dunno, I'm torn. What do you think?

Yahoo's free oneConnect mobile device application for the iPhone 3G, iPhone (with the 2.0 software update) and iPod Touch is now available for download from the App Store. Basically if you want to pimp your address book, this App is for you. Spore Origins Hits the iPhone and iPod Touch

Although Steve announced its release yesterday at the Let's Rock presentation, I got a chance to play with the newest game to hit the App Store at the Spore Release party last week. Spore Origins officially launched for the iPod Touch and iPhone on Monday and comes in at a cool $10 for your gaming pleasure.

Although the full version of Spore on your Mac or PC will take you all the way through Cell to Space stages, Spore Origins is condensed down into 30 levels in the Cell stage only (which was one of my faves anyway). We knew it was coming, we just didn't know when! Well starting today, you can now pick up an iPhone 3G at Best Buy — the first independent US retailer to carry the iPhone 3G. If there has ever been a year to vote, this would be the one to do it! Whether you're a Democrat or a Republican, obviously CitizenSugar has you covered on the details, but Election 08 is a handy little app to have in your pocket as well.

For only a buck at the App Store, Election 08 shows you real time results from polls about who is winning each state, and electoral vote estimates on who will take the General Election. I'm in the market for an iPhone 3G case. I prefer something clear, but want something that will protect my iPhone 3G from scratches, smudges, etc. So far, I'm leaning towards the Contour Flick, which seems to be a best-seller on the apple website. Any ideas?

There's often times when my friends send me a SMS with really important info and I end up deleting it when I go on my SMS-deleting binges. Usually it's an address, phone number, or name of a store or restaurant that I wish I would have saved or at least emailed to myself. For iPhone owners, there's this fantastic site called You Archive It that will store all your SMS messages online, and for free! Their database is safe, encrypted (so no one can read your juicy SMSs), and you can access all your messages whenever from wherever. . . no more losing important texts!

The Tate Liverpool Offering iPhone Multimedia Tours

If you happen to be in Liverpool England and plan to check out the Gustav Klimt exhibition at the Tate Liverpool, you can watch the exhibition's multimedia tour on your iPhone or iPod Touch! And for those of you who don't have an iPhone or Touch just yet, the museum is providing iPod Touch players to rent as well. You can actually watch it from anywhere, but the iPhone podcast was created to enrich the experience for those visiting the actual exhibition.

What can you expect on this tour? Information about Klimt's art and his life, comments from curators, photographs of him and footage showing how the exhibit was created.

This is the first museum tour created in the UK for the iPod Touch and iPhone — most likely because the iPhone was just released in Europe a few short months ago. I think this is great. . . free iPhone museum tours for all!

I work in an area that's populated with a sickening amount of restaurants, yet every single day, when it's lunch time, I have absolutely no idea what I want. Too many choices is a luxurious problem, I realize, but that doesn't make me decide on what to eat any sooner. But now I finally have someone to tell me what to do: Urban Spoon!

The Urban Spoon app for the iPhone can be used to find nearby restaurants like the Yelp app, but that's not the genius fun part: the Shake feature has you scroll to an area, a type of cuisine, and a price range (lock any of the three if you are set on an area or a kind of food), and then you literally shake it!

Shake it easy, shake it like a Polaroid picture, you know the drill. They settle on a randomized restaurant, and then boo-ya grandma, the decision is made for you!
