Ludvig Joins My Roster of Ikea Things I Cannot Live Without

Another day, another awesome geek product provided by Ikea. What is it with this place lately? It's like it wants you to always have a convenient spot to put your laptop! We've got Dave for couch laptopping and Bräda for bed laptoppping, so Dave and Bräda, meet your new brother, Ludvig the laptop desk ($70).

Unlike his predecessors, Ludvig isn't portable; he's a stationary piece of furniture for either your laptop (and a hot-looking one, I might add), or per Ikea's own suggestion, a charging station.

Bonus points to Ikea for having no shortage of inexpensive products for home gadgets. Double bonus points for giving them human names so I can personify them in my posts. It's kicky!

Ikea Brada Laptop Cushion, for Cozy Time

I've never really been that into laptop cushions, mostly because they remind me of those padded desks I used as a kid on road trips.

They've just never seemed that comfortable — until I spotted the Brada laptop cushion on a trip to Ikea this weekend.

Its comfy half-moon shape would be ergonomic, and easier to use when you just want to sink into your couch — or, as per their staging suggestion, while chillaxin' in bed. The price for this coziness: $18.

The Cheapest, Simplest Ikea Laptop Stand

I thought my lovely Dave was cheap ($20) for a laptop stand, but I've been proven wrong by Ikea Hacker, who has taught me that a genius trip to Ikea can be accomplished by looking at products with a mutable, creative eye.

Here, a user submitted this hack for the Lamplig trivet ($6) — accustomed to keeping hot pans off surfaces — where the hacker simply affixed $2 rubber feet to the trivet and achieved an angled laptop stand with airflow underneath. You'd have to use this on a surface though, otherwise I'm getting a visual (and a physical, ouch) of a metal grid print on your thighs.

Ikea Furniture Hits Sims 2, I Look For Dave First

You should know by now that I am a chronic shopper — it's kind of a problem — but I'm a smart shopper, too. I love H&M for trendy but affordable clothes, and Ikea for home furniture and decor that doesn't totally empty my wallet. The Sims apparently feel the same way, too — not only can your Sims sport the cutest H&M outfits, now their houses can be pimped out in classic pieces by the Swedish retail master. With the Ikea Home Stuff Pack for Sims 2, available at the end of June, your virtual Sims home can get Dave-d, Malm-ed, and Benno-ed.

The best thing about this? You don't have to worry about sprouting new gray hairs trying to put this furniture together!

Geeky DIY: Speakers on Legs

These speakers on legs, created by 6moons' David Kan, remind me of plant stands, but in the best way possible. It sucks to have great speakers hanging around the house but having to either put them on the ground or maneuver them onto any usable surface, especially when, as a geek, you took time to hunt down the best-sounding speakers!

Kan's solution is an easy, pretty cheap (comparatively), and good-looking one — he used Ikea butcher block and legs and got drilling. 6moons has step-by-step instructions if you want to brave the DIY front and get an awesome-looking set of custom speaker stands!

Ikea's Cheap, Petite Mikael — Can I Call You Mike?

Since I'm on an Ikea kick with the Benno faux-mount TV stand, I thought I'd bring you another useful piece of home tech.

The Mikael desk would fit right into my place — I still love the convenience of my Dave stand, but sometimes I really get more done sitting at a desk.

And though the pic shows how great the Mikael is for a desktop computer, I'd use it for my laptop, and totally increase the usefulness — when I'm not laptopping, I can do my bills there or use it for my sewing machine!

And seriously — 40 bucks?! Great for a small apartment, dorm, or small budget. In red, birch, pink, blue, white, and dark brown.

Ikea Benno Flat Screen TV Stand: Love It or Leave It?

I obviously love flatscreen TVs, and one thing I have been dying to do with mine is mount it on the wall. So chic! So out of the way! So intimidating! I'm convinced that even if we do figure out the mounting hardware correctly, it won't hold — one bad thing about a charming old apartment? Plaster walls that don't support anything. So when I saw this new Benno TV stand by Ikea, with a reinforced back to "mount" the TV — no drilling into soft, old walls necessary — I lost it. $140 and no damage to my walls? Score! I know that some of you will say all Ikea stuff falls apart, but it doesn't — well, if you're an Ikea expert like me, you can spot the duds from the winners. That said, I'd have to see this in person at a store, but right now, I'm all over it. What about you?

Ikea Mobile Rolling Out?

I'm beyond jealous that Unplggd made it to one of my favorite stores in the world, Ikea, and discovered a new in-store feature called Ikea Mobile. Unplggd's investigation (in the Seattle location) uncovered its use: Using your cell phone to scan barcodes, Ikea Mobile hooks you up with coupons and discounts via text message.

Since it's not yet widely publicized aside from our intrepid blogging spies, here's hoping it's going to do a lot more. Ikea already pleases my geekiness with cheap charging stations and electronic self-checkout, so I look forward to them pulling something cool out of this.

I haven't heard any rumblings of this being used in the Bay Area, but I'm always looking for a good excuse to get out to the Swedish wonderland!

I remember the days when I used to go shopping to IKEA, just for the sake of going there. By the end of my four years at University, I had quite the array of IKEA products that got put in boxes and stored in the basement. If only a site like the ikea hacker existed when I graduated, my new apartment would be full of conversation pieces — and my recycled IKEA goods!
