On first consideration, I thought these Butterfly iPod Docks from PBTeen were too young for me, but then I remembered the Vestalife Ladybug Dock, whose soaring popularity is so high because of its girlie, young design. These docks are cute and fun, but what's not cute, young, or fun, is the $100 price tag! Pottery Barn needs to learn to not start their novelty peripherals at such a high price point, because I was this close. . . thisclose! to getting this for somebody's birthday. What do you think?

At last week's Let's Rock event, a little thing Steve announced was overshadowed by stuff like new iPods and a fix-all iPhone update: Genius! Part of the iTunes 8 update, Genius is a fun new feature for iTunes and iPods, which, I admit, didn't impress me at all when I was first hearing about it. How silly I was! A week later, I'm obsessed with Genius. Why? Getting suggestions of music to buy is OK, but I really took the perk of having automatically-made playlists for granted. As someone who listens to my whole library on random at work and with the iPod on my iPhone, Genius brilliantly puts together stuff that sounds great together and somehow matches my mood. How does it know, based on one song, exactly what I want to hear next? I guess that's why they call it "genius." Seriously, sometimes I get so blasé about new technology and gadgets, wanting to see bigger faster and stronger all the time that when something comes along that's so simple, I forget how much little things can make a difference. So tell me, are you impressed by the little Genius like I am? Or is it just another thing that makes you go 'hmmm'?

Apple Wants to Make It Illegal to Hack Nike+ Shoes

Last week's Let's Rock announcements of new iPods made me want to finally take the plunge and get the Nike+ system so I can rock out with my new Nano and get fit at the same time.

One thing holding me back, though, is Nike's own line of running shoes that you're supposed to purchase to use with Nike+. Since I need a lot of support and am picky about my running shoes, I just thought I'd hack the system and put the Nike+ sensor in my chosen pair of shoes.

But hold up, says Apple — turns out they're filing a patent to make it illegal to put those little sensors in other shoes. I'm deflated. I understand that it's proprietary technology, but I can't tell my feet that! Do you use Nike+?

If you've seen the trailer for Burn After Reading, you've seen Brad Pitt being a bumbling goofball as a personal trainer cum blackmailer. Of course, my geek eye couldn't miss that he's also constantly wearing an iPod armband! Lucky for you, I've hunted it down in case you want to look like the amazing Mr. Pitt and his first generation iPod nano (silly costuming and all).

Available at the Apple store, you can get the same version in aqua blue for $29, which is a bit more fun than the white version on Brad.

With all the ways I could keep myself occupied on the train to and from work – like playing games on my DS, my iPhone, and my PSP – I guess I just plain forgot that I had games on my iPod! I found myself stuck on the train the other morning after just realizing that I forgot not only my DS, but my iPhone too! It was like I was missing an arm I tell you. To add to the pain, our subway system here is known to run pretty slow during rush hour, and this was one of those days. While I was standing there fidgeting, I realized I still had my iPod, and then remembered that I had a few games on there that could occupy my time while the train was making its way to the station. Granted it wasn't as fancy and involved as Lego Indiana Jones, or Lost, but Solitaire did the job well. Do you still play games on your iPod or media player? Source

The rumors have been flying about what Apple has in store for us in the next few months. What will it be? A mini iPhone Nano? An inexpensive mini laptop? Refreshed MacBooks? Oh please Apple insiders, shed some light on this highly debated topic! Well the Silicon Alley Insider got hold of Credit Suisse analyst Bill Shope's Apple predictions and according to him, some new products are certainly on the horizon while other rumored ones, not so much. Ah, romance! If my boyfriend asked me to plug my earphones into his audio splitter on the bus so we could listen to the same song or watch the same episode of Lost, I would think he was astoundingly dorky and fabulously romantic.

I've always been aware of audio splitters, but I'm feeling googly-eyed today and am actually considering buying one — specifically this one by iSound, which is only $10 and includes an extra pair of earphones.

I'm kinda thinking about plugging it into my iPhone so we can party-line someone, sort of like the way your grandparents do on your birthday. Or, you know, not.

Griffin Runs an Apple Exclusive Club: The Powerdock

My quest for the perfect power hub seemed to come to an end with the West Elm Charging Station, but this little number has made me think twice about that declaration. If you have an extensive Apple product family like me, then you can appreciate this Griffin Powerdock that safely charges up to four iPods and/or iPhones at once. I like the sleek brushed metal casing that would add to my already futuristically bling'd out desk, but the extra grippy rubber base will keep me from worrying that my goods will take a tumble over the edge. I do live in an earthquake prone area — a girl can never be too protective of her gadgets, you know.

The Powerdock comes with two or four slots so you can accommodate your own toys, or share the charging real estate with your i-loving partner. Although the $50 - $70 price tag does seem a bit high for Apple-only charging capabilities, it is pretty chic, nonetheless. I'd rock it.

Is Airport Security Getting the "Go Ahead" to Search Devices For Illegal Content?

What is seriously up with airport security anyways?! First they get permission to seize and search your laptop or any other electronic device when crossing the border; then they make the only "TSA approved" laptop bag the ugliest laptop tote on planet earth; and now they're going to be able to search your gadgets (iPod, cell phone, laptop) for illegally downloaded media content?!

According to the Telegraph, leaders of the G8 are meeting this week to decide whether or not to ratify the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) which is aimed at preventing piracy. And if it gets the go ahead, customs agents would be able to search media players for illegally obtained content — ouch! This reminds me of Napster days where people would be downloading songs and all of a sudden a lawsuit would arrive on their doorstep, and sometimes handcuffs — double ouch! What do you guys think about all of this? I'm starting to think airports are becoming the "privacy free zones" — as soon as you step into them, anything is fair game!

Being able to find beauty in the everyday is a necessary skill for modern artists, and the painter of this iPod still life definitely understands that.

Few people would stop and appreciate a gadget these days — in fact, some aesthetes would turn their noses up at the suggestion of a piece of tech being beautiful, but I certainly don't feel that way. United Airlines Charges For Bags, But Will Charge Your iPod

This makes me a little less bitter at United for charging $15 per checked bag: the airline is installing iPod and iPhone docks on its airplanes. Not only will you be able to charge your battery at your seat, you'll be able to scroll through your music and videos from the seat back's screen! Don't watch from that silly little screen, watch from behind somebody's head!

The first few flights to boast the Apple connectivity will be transatlantic, and will sadly be for first-and business-class passengers. That had better not last, or my forgiveness for the checked-bag fee will quickly depart.

GameStop has announced that it will stop carrying Microsoft's Zune because of shabby sales — a blow to the heart of the device that was hoped would be a worthy opponent to Apple's iPod. I feel a tiny bit for the little guy, who's an underdog fighting the good fight of consumer competition.But in my own personal microcosm, I don't actually know anyone who owns or has owned the Zune, while I have had many iPods (and my iPhone) and most of my friends have also owned multiple iPods. I struggle to even think if I know anyone with a non-iPod. But I want to know — do any of you own an MP3 player that Apple didn't make? Source

Do You Ever Pretend to Listen to Music on Your Headphones?

This month's InStyle had a funny "Truth or Tabloid" item about Katherine Heigl — Star magazine claimed that the actress pretends to rock out to her iPod without music playing so that people won't bother her on the street. Her rep busted the rumor and responded that Katherine has an iPhone (which we can certainly attest to) and is usually just talking on the ear buds. It's nice to know she's not hiding out, but I totally have to fess up here — I do this! I pretty much always have my earbuds in when I'm walking to and from work and on public transportation, and I'm not always listening to music. I admit to sometimes eavesdropping on conversations (hey, if you're talking on the bus, someone's listening), but I definitely do it to avoid being bothered. I have even pretended to be on the phone on my earbuds to get out of being bugged by those pesky solicitors on the sidewalk! Have you ever done this?Pacific Coast News

GrooveToons: Surprisingly Normal Alarm Clock For Nano

It always seems like wacky alarm clocks are a dime a dozen, but I like the GrooveToons alarm clock for nano because it offers a playful package and alarmingly normal function. It doesn't roll off the nightstand like the Clocky or emit a glowing light, it just connects to your iPod nano and wakes you up to your favorite tunes or playlists.

The device, $50, features the usual snooze button and adjustable volume, and offers the bonus of overnight iPod charging. I still can't quite figure out what the little "eyeballs" at the top are, but I suppose they just add to the fun factor?

Honestly, I wasn't sure if I was getting punk'd again after all the internet April Fool's shenanigans this week, but after a bit of research, I think this is probably just a concept project. In a story posted on the UK's Telegraph this week, a Taiwanese electronics specialist has developed a mind reading headset to control your iPod. Since walking and looking down at your iPod is just too distracting, the iMind allows you to choose what song, or what type of song you want played, just by thinking of it. Kinda like the (real) gaming headset we saw a few months ago, this one gives your brain a direct feed into your iPod, no remotes required.

Products on the Apple site always look so pristine and beautiful, but what do they really look like in "real life"? iLounge got their hands on not one, not two, but ALL of the iPod colors, so we can compare as we dare. As you can see, the new third-generation pink nano isn't as bright as its earlier pink model. . . I actually like that it's a tad subdued — what do you think? Hopefully this helps you narrow down what color you want next in your nano collection. I love love LOVE the periwinkle blue!

I'll admit it, slapping "i" in front of anything is a surefire way to incite my curiosity. Swiss company Willisau (beware, the website's in German) is getting in on the i-action with the iTable, which is among the cutting-edge design offerings at this year's IMM Cologne, an international design fair. IMM features mostly modern furniture, but Willisau seems to recognize that there's nothing more modern than integrating your tech into your home in a beautiful way.The table itself is pretty hot — sleek, white-lacquered MDF with the feeling of a Parsons table. However, it plays music and recharges itself from the table. . . . just like any other iPod dock. The table is not yet for sale, and I suspect its pricing would affect how I feel about something that may be a glorified iPod dock. What do you guys think?. . . An advertising agency called DDB in Sydney, Australia has created a print campaign for the NSW Police to bring attention to the number of teenagers dying from being hit by cars while crossing the street while listening to their iPods. There's been a great deal of talk about cities banning iPods on sidewalks, but this campaign certainly takes the anti-walking-with-your-iPod sentiment a step further. At least two companies are now selling software that allows students to view lecture slides on their media player screens. According to The New York Times, this technology offers students who miss an important point the first time an easy method to retrieve and review lecture material outside of the classroom. As you can see below, the iPod's screen is a perfect tool for viewing an art history podcast or a biology lecture, with the iPod Touch providing the ability to zoom in and out. Would you love to have a bathroom that is decked out with all the latest gadgets? Imagine having a bathtub like this one I spotted on Bornrich. Jackets with built in iPod controls and special gadget pockets have been popular in the geek apparel world for a few years now, but up until now have been a little masculine. I found a new crop of slightly more chic jackets that were designed with gadget users in mind just in time for trips to the pumpkin patch and Winter weather.

You know when you are stuck on a bus, waiting in line, sitting in a dentist's office or just plain bored? Do you whip out your cell phone or gaming device for distraction? Or maybe you are like LC, who turns to her iPod for music and videos. Whatever the situation, I'm wondering what gadgets people tend to use when they need to kill a few minutes. Depending how much time I need to waste, I usually start on my BlackBerry, sending texts and returning emails and then I move on to my iPhone to watch YouTube videos. Ever since the release of the iPod and snazzy Smartphones the media has been a buzz about iPod thieves and the assumption that iPods are actually contributing to crime and hearing loss.On the flip side, many schools have started using iPods as an educational tool. Monday's New York Times featured "In Some Schools, iPods Are Required Listening," an article about how the use of digital music players help bilingual students improve their vocabulary and grammar by singing along to pop songs and mimicking pronunciation. I think the idea is fantastic because using an iPod provides the same function of listening to language lessons on tape. Do you think the iPods can provide an educational benefit in class, or are you against their use in school?Source

As MP3 players and expensive cell phones become more prevalent we hear countless news stories about the devices getting stolen in gyms, schools, buses and even off people's desks. Heck, "Dateline NBC" even did a "To Catch an i-Jacker" special this year featuring iPod thieves. So how bad is it really? It's hard to tell, but the New York Daily News went so far as to blame iPods for a rise in violent crime recently. I've never had any expensive devices stolen from me (although I do suspect someone took off with my flash drive!), but I've had a few friends tell me their cell phones or iPods were taken out of their purses while partying or out to dinner. Sync Your iPhone/iPod With Beyond TV

Whenever I download new songs or shows on my laptop, I try to make it a priority to transfer them onto my iPhone and iPod. What usually happens is I grab my iPod just as I'm heading out the door and then get irritated when I remember that all my hot new shows went on my iPhone instead...urgh! Gizmodo has announced that there's a new software version of Beyond TV that will automatically sync recordings to both your iPod and iPhone with an optional plug-in...helping forgetful people like me to keep their gadgets synced.With Beyond TV version 4.7 you can sync your shows and import your iTunes podcast RSS for syncing as well. There is also support for Firefly Mobile which allows the use of iPhones and other cell phones to act as remote controls for the device. You can currently test out Beyond TV with a free trial, and then it will cost you $70. Beyond TV doesn't have OSX support just yet.

The LEGO obsession continues with this Lego iPod dock from 10x10. Featured on technabob, these tiny blocks come with built-in speakers, which I'm assuming are the crosses in the front. This may be a wild guess, but expect sound quality similar to that when you crank up your iPod full blast with the earphones still connected. As for a power source, that I'm still trying to figure out. Priced around $16. A geeky or geek chic accessory?

Alan Alda Uses His iPod For Work

When I think of Alan Alda I think of M*A*S*H and grandpas, so I was a little shocked to read his interview with Switched, in which he reveals he's all about tech.

In fact, Alada's interview shocked me even more than the one Switched did with Jackie Collins, who also admitted she uses gadgets and gizmos for work. Alda seemed to be up on studies that show teens use texting instead of e-mail and, unlike the rest of us, he has a valid excuse for using his iPod — he's learning lines. What else did he reveal?

What gadgets do you always bring with you to the set?
Alda: My cell phone, laptop and iPod. I use the IPod to learn my lines.

What cell phone do you have right now and what do you love or hate about it?
Alda: Cingular 8125. It has broadband and a real keyboard. I've gone to Europe with it instead of a laptop and written parts of my book on it.

Who's the last person you sent a text message to and what was it about?
Alda: I texted one of my granddaughters to say hi. Like a lot of kids, she hardly uses e-mail anymore.

Excuse Me, But Your Baby Just iPood Its Pants

Either I have a weakness when it comes to babies, or the iPod + baby combo is just too much cuteness for a woman to handle because I when I saw these iPood Baby Creepers on Neatorama, I had the same ooowing and awwing reaction I got from the precious iPod scroll wheel tee's. These 100 percent combed cotton jumpers only cost $15, and if you look closely you'll notice the baby silhouette is holding an iPod — and even rocking out!
