Do "iPhone Killers" Make You Think Twice?

Although I can appreciate new phones hitting the market with labels like "iPhone Killer," it really doesn't make me think twice about my decision to buy an iPhone. I'm pretty well immersed in a Mac world — my work and home computers are both Macs — so for me, it only made sense to get a phone made by Apple. I, of course, didn't bat an eye when Nokia announced the N9, its own version of the "iPhone Killer", that boasts all the same goodies the iPhone has, plus a far superior Zeiss 5-megapixel camera (with video capabilities), 32GB of memory (expandable to 48GB with SD card), and a sliding QWERTY keyboard. I must admit that I know plenty of iPhone heads that were turned by tech temptation. Do so-called "iPhone Killers" make you think twice about your purchase?

Geek Tip: Don't Send Money to Nigeria

Do you really have to read gadget blogs every day like I do to recognize that sending money to someone in Nigeria via sites like Craigslist is a terrible idea?

Because you could knock me over with a feather every time I hear another story about someone falling for a Nigerian scam, and this new one, about a women who lost $400,000 to a Nigerian racket, is a real doozie. I mean, she was promised over $20 million dollars if she just helped this stranger in Africa . . . what could go wrong?

Seriously people, you don't have to be up on the latest technology in computers, cell phones, or televisions, but listen to me here: Never send money to a stranger in another country. Never send money to a stranger who contacts you via email, period. If someone is responding to a Craigslist ad you've posted, only deal locally and in person.

You're probably savvy enough as you're reading this blog, so do your less-aware family members a favor and forward this along.

An avid iPhone app watch site has reported that Apple has reached a huge milestone — a grand total of 10,000 apps (or thereabouts, they concede).I certainly feel like I've looked at 10,000 apps and tested out nearly that many, but when it comes down to it, I edit quite harshly on my iPhone. I have honed it down to ones that I absolutely need or love, and get rid of those that are really just novelties and fun for a day.Even so, I still have about 40 essential apps on my iPhone (and that number looks to increase, since I'm crazy for new cool ones); so share with me — how many do you have?

Would You Take an Online Appointment With Your Doctor?

I've had plenty of experiences where I had to wait what seemed like forever to see my doctor. Whether it be waiting months for a routine physical, or hanging out longer than expected in the waiting room because he's running behind. Don't even get me started on the hours I've had to take off of work because the only time I could see him is in the middle of the afternoon. All of these circumstances made me think that a webcam-enabled visit from my doctor would be kinda cool, and a new company called American Well is trying to make that option a reality for the masses. Starting in January, Blue Cross Blue Shield in Hawaii will be offering virtual visits to their members. Patients can log-on at any time, and there will be a physician available for them to ask questions, get advice, and get prescriptions. Kinda like a phone visit, but with some face-to-face interaction. I like this idea since I'm pretty healthy, and I find that most of my appointments end up being more hassle than they are worth. This was the only way to prosecute Drew for her involvement in Meier's suicide — accusing her of fraudulently creating a MySpace account. However, it already looks like the case could be thrown out, because she has testified that she never read MySpace's terms of use, nor did she agree to them.I personally cannot remember the last time I actually read a website's terms of use; I agree to them, sure, but it's rare that I actually read the fine print. Starting today, you can get access to over 2,000 movies for rent thanks to Blockbuster's new Blockbuster OnDemand movie service. For a limited time, customers can pick up the tiny MediaPoint player by 2Wire for free with the purchase of 25 advance rentals for $99. With this player, you'll have access to Blockbuster's digital library, and after your 25 rentals are up, you can rent movies for $1.99 each.

The actual box works with a broadband connection (WiFi and Ethernet compatible), and can play high-def videos via HDMI cables. And even if you aren't a Blockbuster member, you can still use the Blockbuster OnDemand service. MediaPoint players can be purchased online or at select Blockbuster stores. Though I belong to LinkedIn, as do all of my friends who also use Facebook and other major networks, I have not yet heard of anyone getting a job from their participation on the site, though that's the sole reason to belong for most. I have heard of reconnections and career opportunities through Facebook and MySpace, however, which is not the only way a network can lift you up — who doesn't know someone who's made a romantic connection through Facebook? My social network participation has really only tangibly gotten me closer or better connected friendships, but nothing like a job or a partner. Is Surfing the Internet Beneficial For Teens?

There are so many confounding studies related to teens and technology, that it's getting more difficult to decipher if tech is a help or hindrance on an adolescent's development and overall well-being. First we heard that teens aren't sleeping enough because of their gadgets, but then we find out that cell phones and texting are good because it improves the parent-teen relationship.

And now, a new study that was conducted over the course of three years in the US with 800 teenagers, found that online time for teens is important for development. The report's author, Dr. Mimi Ito, said that behavior known as "geeking out" helps teens explore creative passions like gaming, video editing and writing, and it also helps them learn how to communicate online and create a public identity.

What do you think about this? Although I feel that all of the above reasons are true, I can't imagine being a teen in this huge "tech era," spending more of my time online than hanging out with friends.

After hearing some ho-hum reviews about the BlackBerry Storm, I was beginning to think that it wasn't going to give the iPhone a run for its money as predicted. But now that I've watched the Storm in action, there's a feature that I'm already in love with, and I think you physical keyboard fans will love it too.

Unlike the iPhone, which is strictly a glass touch screen, the BlackBerry Storm touch buttons actually depress when you touch them, since the entire backside of the screen is backed by springs. You will feel the screen being pressed and will hear a quiet click, just as you would with a keyboard on a Curve or Bold!

Who Knew You Could Make So Much Money Playing Games?

Yesterday, Dr. Pepper announced that for the first time ever, it would feature a professional athlete on its bottles. This athlete doesn't come with ripped arms, or muscular legs, but he does have some thumbs of steel. Tom Taylor, who plays Halo 3 professionally (putting in up to 15 hours a day of practice), has not only landed his first endorsement deal with Dr. Pepper, but has also signed a three-year sponsorship contract with Major League Gaming to the tune of $250,000.

New York City-based Major League Gaming organizes teams and professional gamers to compete in tournaments around the country. This year, MLG has over 50 professional teams ready to play, and vie for endorsement deals aimed at the gaming community. I know several other companies that might do well with advertisements targeted at gamers — Cheetos, Mountain Dew, and Domino's (otherwise known as geek fuel), just to name a few. And although I'm sure we wouldn't recognize newly coined gaming celeb Tom Taylor (who goes by Tsquared, natch) if he passed us on the street, he does carry around a Sharpie nonetheless. You know, just in case.

You know the pleasure you get when you add a colorful new theme to your iGoogle page? OK, multiply that by 1,000, and I give you the sleek new themes for Gmail. Just launched today, there are already 30 different themes to choose from — ranging from nature themes to shiny and chrome-style themes. Google has given Gmail a little makeover with crisper and cleaner lines (it reminds me of Google reader). To spice up your email, go to the themes section in settings and you should see the new themes. Ever since the concept of a checkpoint-friendly bag came onto the scene, I've been underwhelmed. So far, the bags produced haven't been so stylish, including these newly-released checkpoint-friendly bags by MobileEdge "for her."The main reason I'm wary to purchase a new bag is that I just don't believe I'll get through the security line without having to remove my computer from one of these special bags. And I would not be about to argue with airport security either with a, "Oh no, you don't understand, this bag is checkpoint-friendly!"Adding fuel to my theory is that the TSA approved some common styles of laptop bag for this purpose, but at no time on my recent flights has anyone assured me that I could leave my computer in its sleeve. Therefore, I don't necessarily trust that I'd be able to breeze through airport security, laptop in laptop bag the whole time — not quite yet, anyway. Do you?

Google Images Adds Millions of Historic TIME Magazine Photos

One thing that upsets me about Google Images is the fact that it's sometimes difficult to find older photos — hey, the Internet is only 39 years old. Google is trying to change this by hosting millions of photos from the LIFE photo archive from the 1950s and onward. Search various categories like people, places, events, sports, and culture or add "source:life" to any Google image search to only search the LIFE photo archive. I did this with Marilyn Monroe and these were the results I got — magical, right?!

If you haven't tested out Google Docs yet, what's stopping you? The spreadsheets were indispensable for me over the last few months when I collaborated with friends on a party and planned a trip out of town with several friends — my boyfriend and I even use it to make grocery lists (watching someone edit your doc simultaneously is endlessly fascinating).So I was shocked when I read that only 1 percent of users utilize Google Docs, and that people are still using Microsoft Office. I use both; not ready, I guess, to completely live on the cloud and go Google Docs all the way, but I can foresee a day when I might. What about you? Are you a Google Docs user?

Obama to Give Up His BlackBerry, Email to Soon Follow

Sad news for President-elect Barack Obama. The BlackBerry-addict who is often photographed with his trusty Curve on his belt and is always checking his BB while en route, will soon be bidding his favorite gadget farewell due to email security concerns. According to The New York Times, Obama has already started slowing down communication to friends and family from his personal email account; even though he hopes to be the first American president to have a laptop on his desk in the Oval Office.

This isn't the first time a new president has had to say good-bye to personal email accounts. Before George W. Bush was inaugurated, he had to send this message, from his personal email address G94B@aol.com, to his close contacts:

Since I do not want my private conversations looked at by those out to embarrass, the only course of action is not to correspond in cyberspace. This saddens me. I have enjoyed conversing with each of you.

As for Obama, it's still being decided whether or not he can keep using email, which is sad news in itself, but the hardest part has got to be seeing his BlackBerry go bye-bye. Hey, I guess it's better to be safe than sorry.

Microsoft recently unveiled a mandatory site redesign for Hotmail, which looks blue and pleasant enough, but not everyone is as happy with the new look. I wanted to take a look-see, so I signed up for an account. Even though it's been years, I remembered my old Hotmail account info — not that it mattered, since everything is Windows Live now.But, oh to access my old Hotmail account — I had it during my college days years ago, when it seemed like everyone did, though I now use mainly Gmail (where it seems all my friends are now, too). Since I feel like a Hotmail account a few years ago was as pervasive as AOL was 15 years ago and Gmail is now, prove or unprove my theory: Have you ever been a Hotmail user?

Would You Take a Camera Pill?

I'd need more than a spoonful of sugar to help gulp down the camera pill that Philips is introducing. The smart pill would be taken with water and, once inside, would release a targeted amount of medicine. I'm not cavalier about things I'll ingest, but if my doctor said it was cool, I think I'd be intrigued to swallow it. So far, it's just for digestive disorders, but can you imagine where this could go? Would you be afraid to take a camera pill, or would it be just another prescription to swallow?

YouTube Takes the Plunge Into Live Webcasting

Some days (when I have time), I'll get a pretty great ab workout from all the laughs I find on YouTube. Some of my friends think it's the best invention since Cheetos — and it looks like they're about to get even better. Not only is YouTube calling itself the "world's largest video discovery platform", but it's also dipping its toes into the pool of live webcasting; starting with their inaugural YouTube Live event taking place here in San Francisco on November 22.

The huge two hour webcast will host YouTube vets Katy Perry, Will.i.Am, Esmee Denters, along with performances by other well known YouTube users. Does the name Tay Zonday ring any bells? I thought so. But I'm betting the highlight of the evening will be going down at the post-show party somewhere around the Guitar Hero kiosks. Musicians and geeks in one room? You know there will be some serious shredding taking place!

I'm one of the few who thinks there's nothing wrong with giving a gift card (especially because I love to get gift cards). If you have some reservations about them being boring gifts, then you may reconsider — Target is introducing gift cards that double as mini digital cameras, while Best Buy will have gift cards that are also speakers!With such fun stuff built into the gift cards, you may not want to redeem them. These could also cease to take the wind out of people's sales that were expecting more than just a gift card. What do you think of this idea?
