What's with all the gadget hate lately? First Nick Nolte blamed his house fire on a broken printer and now Qantas is investigating the role of laptops and other personal gadgets in a recent scary altitude drop.Now I'm not one to say "there's nothing to fear," since I can be pretty paranoid about this stuff myself. I heed the instructions to turn things off and keep them off when I'm flying, but I know that there's not really hard evidence saying that personal electronics definitely cause plane crashes and operating malfunctions.It's an uneasy conclusion, I know, but I feel like you have to just trust that you'll be OK on a plane. Better be safe than sorry and turn your gadgets off when the nice flight attendants tell you to. How do you feel about it?Source

Not only was I partaking a little more of the alcoholic beverages, but I was also more apt to know the math questions it's supposed to ask you when you try to send an email late at night. The issues we face, as drinking geeks, are so much harder than our parents' generation. Not only do we have to exercise caution before emailing someone under the influence, there's the danger of drunken texts, Twitters, and the evergreen drunk dial. My boozy life only really gets as crazy as checking out things like the Beer USB Drive anymore, so entertain me. Have you ever been the sender or recipient of a drunken email? The Netflix Movie Watching Championship Comes to a Close

After 123 hours and 10 minutes of continuous movie watching (yes, that means zero hours of sleep), the Netflix Movie Watching World Championship in NYC's Time Square has come to a close. Yesterday, Susan Sarandon was on hand to deliver the final movie Thelma and Louise (which was movie number 57) to the winners Suresh Joachim and Claudia Wavra. Joachim, a Sri Lanka native who now resides in Toronto, and Wavra of Petersberg, Germany achieved a new Guinness World Record for most consecutive hours spent watching movies. T-Mobile is reporting that presales for the first phone to use Google's Android platform, the G1, are three times higher than what they expected, which is awesome. I'm happy to see a smartphone enter into iPhone and BlackBerry territory so seamlessly, and the G1 is a great phone to inaugurate Android. Interestingly, in my informal polls of friends, when I ask if they're interested in the G1, they say yes but that they'd really like to wait for a show-stopping phone to utilize Android before they switch cell phones. It makes sense, since many shy from early adoption and wait until a better, second version comes out.So, is that you? Are you into Android but not necessarily the G1?Source

Teens Not Sleeping Enough Because of Their Gadgets

This is definitely one of those studies that doesn't surprise me. An Australian study has shown that over 50 percent of third- and fourth-year high-school students aren't getting enough sleep because they are too busy playing games, watching TV, listening to their iPod, or chatting on the phone.

It was the males who were found glued to their video games, TVs, or media players, while the females couldn't get enough gab time in on their telephones. What's happening is the teens can't seem to pull themselves away from gadgets before bedtime, which is causing them to lose large amounts of sleep.

Dr. Kurt Lushington, a professor within the School of Psychology at the University of South Australia, who lead the study had this to say about it: "Sleep is very important for learning and memory, particularly in year 12 when pressure is on to perform. A lot of kids are reporting that they're tired when they wake up and there are quite a few reporting they're sleepy during the day."

It'd be interesting if they conducted a similar study for adults. I may not be chatting on my cell before bed, but I am trying to catch up on my TiVo taped shows!

In this election year, the candidates have to face the modern issues that technology brings. I don't just mean the use of technology in the campaign, like Palin's sudden Wikipedia debut or watching speeches on the Internet; I mean how the candidates themselves regard technology. In one corner, Barack Obama is perceived as the tech-savvy candidate, as an iPhone user, the promoter of an iPhone App, and a campaign website with a user-friendly interface. He's facing off with the less tech-savvy McCain, of whom much has been made of his admission that he doesn't know how to use a computer, which raises the question of, how much do you need to understand something to pass laws on it?On the running mate side, you have Palin, whose use of email is prolific but faulty, and the news that Biden's political history includes support for the RIAA.Admittedly, there are far bigger issues our candidates are facing, but I do take technology into consideration, for the obvious reason that tech is a huge part of my life. I've been waiting to hear more about dancer-powered nightclubs since I heard about the one that opened in London this Summer, and it looks like one has opened in Rotterdam, and is now in business! When clubgoers hit the dance floor at Club Watt, the energy produced by their moving feet lights up the LED dance floor.

Other sustainable practices go on besides the booty shakin' as well, like using a rainwater catch system to use in the toilets.

You know what I'd like to see? A Dance Dance Revolution-like pad I can use in my house to party on and power my casa. My electric bill would disappear!

Would You Bike to Work If Bikes Were Wired?

I haven't been hit too hard by the rising gas prices here in the US, but If I was a driver, I would definitely be considering buying a bike right about now. This has to be good for the bike industry, as more people are turning to gas-friendly modes of transportation to save a few bucks. This point was proven over the weekend at the Interbike Trade Show in Las Vegas. Over 23,000 people attended the show, which promoters say is the biggest turnout ever. One of the bikes featured at the show was the Tailwind eBike – an electric-powered model that goes 25 miles on a charge – which I wouldn't mind owning, except for the price. Sure $3,200 bucks for an electric-powered bike is a lot of cash, but for my money, there would need to be a few adjustments made first. My preferred list of amenities to add on the eBike would include GPS, a self-powered iPod or phone charger, and maybe even a headlight so I can see and be seen at night. I know these ideas may seem silly, but all my friends who drive charge their phones and iPods in their cars, and use GPS regularly. If a bike was their main mode of transport, I'm sure they would miss these capabilities. Would you buy a bike as your mode of transportation if they were a bit more wired? Source

Even though I previously got rid of a landline, I let one sneak back into my life when I wanted to upgrade my Internet service, and the best deal in town happens to be bundles. Combining cable with voice and Internet yielded the best deals, and I'm not alone; a survey shows that customers prefer subscribing to bundles offered by phone companies, rather than cable companies. Around here, no phone companies offer bundles like the cable company does, so that's not an option for me, but I think it's interesting that so many people are going for bundles, rather than cherry-picking each service. I do it for the price and supreme convenience, even though I now receive a service (voice) that I don't care that much about. What about you? Well this November, I'll really get to rock out since the AC/DC LIVE: Rock Band Track Pack video game will be hitting store shelves. The game is playable with any compatible music instrument controller, and players who have Rock Band can import their tracks into this game. The AC/DC LIVE: Rock Band Track Pack will be available on November 2 at Wal-Mart and Sam's Clubs stores in the US for the Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation 3 and PS2 ($30). Megapixels have been rising in cameras since digital cameras came on the scene, and now they're jumping up in another place: our cell phones. An LG source recently hinted that camera phones could reach 10 megapixels in the near future.That sounds awesome, since I love to take shots when I'm out and about, and the higher the quality the better. But there's another opportunity here — with a high megapixel camera on your phone, you could drop an entire gadget and just use your cell phone.Of course, photography aficionados like myself would never lose dedicated cameras altogether, since SLRs are a different ballgame and I can't imagine all the features and adjustments could be on a camera phone right away — but the more casual user could definitely benefit.Source

Bus Driver Thinks He Can Drive and Play PSP Simultaneously

Bummed out about the fact that you can't text while driving? Take heed that banning unsafe practices like that will hopefully eliminate other things people think they can do while driving, like this gentleman who could not put down his PSP.

What's so wrong with that you say? He was driving a city bus full of people.

This yahoo certainly can't say it was an emergency game, as you could say with a cell phone or texting, but in any case, I do hope he got the high score.

He'll need that to comfort himself when he's not exactly acing the "why'd you get fired" questions on job interviews.

ShopSavvy To Be the Hottest App to Run on Google Android

It's a refreshing change to finally hear about apps that aren't Apple or iPhone related! One of the first Android apps I've read about and quite frankly - one that sounds right up my alley - is called ShopSavvy; a comparison-shopping application that was specifically built for Google's Android mobile phone platform. One of the winners in Google's Android Developer Challenge, Shop Savvy (formerly known as GoCart), will price products online and show you a rundown of prices so you can comparison shop!

ShopSavvy acts as your very own shopping assistant, giving you the ability to scan the barcode of products by taking pics with your phone's camera. With this pic, ShopSavvy will then compare prices online and the prices of local retailers with your phone's built-in GPS. Now this is one I cannot wait to try out!

Texting While Driving Gets Banned in California

This past July, a new law came into effect that now requires millions of Californians to use hands-free technology like headsets and bluetooth-enabled devices while driving. Well on Wednesday, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger began signing bills into law, one that includes banning text messaging while driving. According to SFGate, the bill SB28 will ban texting while driving and forces drivers to keep their "hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road," said Schwarzenegger in a written statement. Other states that have already adopted this law include Louisiana, Minnesota, New Jersey, Connecticut and Washington.

Aly and AJ Design Guitar Hero and Rock Band Guitars

I'm not overly familiar with this female duo, but popular to to the tween generations, teen pop band Aly and AJ, will be coming out with their own guitars for games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band for the Wii and PS2 in a few weeks. Each guitar will cost a cool $70, and fans will be able to choose from Aly's Guitar, which will feature a heart and cross bone print in a pink and brown color, or AJ's pink Guitar that features a purple zebra print and is in the shape of a heart. Performance Designed Products, the makers of the guitars, will create one of the guitars specifically for tweens, ages 8 to 12 while the other will be targeted for teens and older. Wonder if they have one in my size?

I can't tell you enough how important email and online security is! I've been a little obsessed with the recent Sarah Palin email hacking scandal, but have put off saying much about it — until now. The suspected hacker — a 20-year old University of Tennessee student, and son of state representative Mike Kernell — was seen in front of the Grand Jury on Tuesday, and was let go without an indictment. Although there aren't many details as to what was or was not found, I suspect that the search for the real hacker continues.

Although hacking into anyone's personal account is a violation of the law and should be prosecuted accordingly, what really makes me uncomfortable is knowing how easy it was for the hacker to break into her account! Just by guessing a few password reset questions and some research on Wikipedia, they were in. I've talked in length about protecting your log-ins, but it's only a few security questions that separate hackers from your personal email when a password reset has been requested. Be diligent in keeping those questions and passwords hard to guess, and you won't have to worry about your emails displayed on the web, or your identity being stolen!

T-Mobile's G1 Android Phone Is Here!

Google, HTC, and T-Mobile announced the world's first Android-powered device this morning in NYC — the T-Mobile G1! One of the most talked about handsets of the year, the G1 can now be preordered by T-Mobile customers from the T-Mobile G1 website and starting Oct. 22, the device will be available at select T-Mobile retail stores for $179 with a two-year voice and data plan. By November the G1 will be making its way to the United Kingdom, and the rest of Europe by the start of 2009. Here's a rundown of the specs:

The G1 looks similar to the iPhone, but the touchscreen can swivel out to show off the full QWERTY keyboard.
WiFi, 3D graphics acceleration, a 3-megapixel camera.
3G with dual-band UMTS.
Full HTML browser and email support (Gmail as push and POP3 and IMAP email services).
GPS functionality.
Access to the Android market for new apps and Amazon MP3 for music purchases.
You can read Word, Excel, and other Office documents, but it doesn't offer Microsoft Exchange support.
The G1 comes with a trackball for one-handed navigation.
You can access Google Maps (including Street View), and use YouTube.

Google Squashes Spam Problem in Gmail
