Hey there, smartphone addict, did you know that there's an activity tracker already built into your iPhone 5S? Yep, it's called the M7 motion coprocessor, and it measures motion data from things like the phone's accelerometer, gyroscope, and compass. The incredible thing about the M7 is that it requires way less battery power than the A7 main chip.
Breeze (free) is a new daily fitness tracking app that taps into the iPhone 5S's motion coprocessor and presents you with that data in an elegant way. Instead of rocking a Jawbone UP or a Fitbit, which run upward of $100, just keep an iPhone 5S in your pocket, and Breeze will start tracking steps without draining your phone's battery (or your wallet — it's free!).
The app is made by the same team that created RunKeeper (free), a popular fitness training app. Like RunKeeper, Breeze offers a little bit of coaching to get you moving. Users will get timed messages throughout the day, nudging them to work toward their step goal or praising them for taking a long walk. An activity profile offers users a look at their activity history, total time moving, and total number of steps at a glance.
Eventually, Breeze will integrate with the RunKeeper app and open up to other smartphone platforms. But, for now, it's a standalone app just for the iPhone 5S.
Chances are, you already have your phone on you — so download the app, and get walking. What do you have to lose? If you want to kick-start other good habits with small steps, then consider these options.
