Be it be "man, woman, otter," Matt Smith just wants to see the right person take the role of the 12th Doctor, and it looks like that person may have been found, as the Whovian rumor mill revved into gear earlier this week with word that the next Doctor will be announced during a BBC special airing this weekend. Much to fans' relief, the BBC quickly confirmed the rumors that we'll learn the identity of the next Doctor on Sunday.

The program, Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor, will be simulcast Sunday, Aug. 4, in the UK on BBC1 and in the US on BBC America at 2 p.m. ET/11 a.m. PT. As you can imagine from the literal title, the show — hosted by British TV presenter Zoë Ball, is intended to announce Matt's Doctor successor.

As the BBC itself puts it, "The half-hour show will include live special guests, Doctors old and new, as well as companions and celebrity fans. Current Doctor Matt Smith and lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat will both give interviews in the special."

A current favorite by gambling bookies currently? Peter Capaldi, a 55-year-old actor most recently seen in World War Z.

We'll be sitting at the edge of our TARDIS towel, waiting for the big news! Until then, watch the trailer for the live Doctor Who event below!
