How Visual Effects Turned Benedict Into a Beast
No, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug did not win an Oscar for best sound editing, best sound mixing, or best visual effects (Gravity swept all categories) — but Benedict Cumberbatch did win our hearts and maybe an honorary Oscar for his portrayal of the movie's incredible dragon. The Cumberking took great measures to become J.R.R. Tolkien's most fearsome beast. He donned a motion capture suit, roared for the cameras, slinked around on a sheepskin rug, and studied lizards at a zoo. Benedict didn't take his dragon duties lightly. In this episode of The Sync Up, we go behind the scenes of The Hobbit's second installment and dig into the film's amazing visual effects.
