Put a Ring on It: How to Make an iPhone Tone Out of Any MP3

My dear, you've been using Marimba for far too long — spice up your iPhone with a new custom ringtone! In this geek tip, learn how to make your favorite song play when the universe calls. It doesn't take special software or serious coding skills to create or customize a ringtone out of an MP3.

All you'll need to get started is iTunes, an iPhone, and an MP3 that you'll want to listen to over and over again. Follow our simple step-by-step guide and, in the words of Bey, if you like it, then you should put a ring(tone) on it.

Start
Select Your MP3

Important to note here: the song must be an MP3. But beyond that, you can choose any jam of your liking.

Go to File > Get Info

You can also use the shortcut Command + I. In the Info window, select "Options" and check "Start Time" and "Stop Time." Set any 30-second time period you like, and then click "OK." We went with the first 30 seconds of our song.

Create an AAC Version

Once back in library view, right-click on the song, and select "Create AAC Version."

3 / 9
Drag the AAC Version to Your Desktop

Immediately, you'll see a new 30-second song in your library. Drag this clip to the desktop. Then, select the original song in your library, and go to File > Get Info.

Uncheck "Start" and "Stop" Times

After going to File > Get Info (or command + I), uncheck "start time" and "stop time." This will play the song in its entirety, instead of just a 30-second clip. Click "OK."

Change Desktop File to .m4r

Now go to your desktop and locate where you dragged the song. Change the extension from .m4a to .m4r.

Delete "AAC version"

Go back to iTunes and delete the 30-second "AAC version" you created before.

7 / 9
Drag and Drop .m4r File Into Library

Select the .m4r file on your desktop, and drop it into iTunes (or double-click to play). The file should show up in the "Tones" section of your library.

Sync Your iPhone

Plug your iPhone into your computer, sync ringtones, and . . . voilà! To set the song as your new ringtone, go to Settings > Sounds > Ringtone (underneath Vibrate), and select the tone you've created.
