Waze relies on the power of crowdsourcing, using data provided by users to make its maps as informative as possible. Data like which roads are the most congested are provided by the Waze community. Users contribute information by reporting it, or just leaving the app open while they drive.

Waze turns the cut-and-dry commute into a lively social network, where Wazers message other drivers, or change their avatar to reflect different moods, like LOL, cool, frustrated, happy, or in love. Using the app is also like playing a game (hopefully post-commute). When drivers contribute, they earn points and high scorers receive access to exclusive avatars.

Moving around Waze's map is fun, fast, and interactive. Those smiling icons are actually drivers in the area, and users can "ping" those drivers by tapping on their avatar. It'll also pinpoint (literally) which lights have speed cameras, where heavy traffic is, or where police are staked out in a speed trap.

Before beginning navigation Waze gives you a quick digest of your route: how many miles, the major highway you'll take to get to your destination, your estimated travel time, and any major congested areas or speed traps.

And if you don't like what you see in that digest, the alternative route options are just as informative — showing estimated travel time, major highway taken, mileage, and heavy congestion or speed traps.

Bolded arrows show drivers which way to go. Waving your hand across the screen when the app is open will enable spoken directions, making navigation easy — and safe — for drivers.

Get real-time updates as you're driving, thanks to contributing Wazers along your route. Tap the report icon as soon as you see a traffic jam, accident, etc. to save the location and time of the report, then categorize the item once you've come to a full stop.
