Import Precaptured Videos to Instagram!

Time to update Instagram for iOS and Android .

Time to update Instagram for iOS and Android . . . the feature we've been waiting for has arrived at last: uploading preshot videos.

In Instagram 4.1, mobile phoneographers can import already-captured video from Camera Roll or the device's media library. Once you've imported the video footage, trim and crop the media with Instagram's new video editor, then add a filter and cover frame as usual.

Video is also launching on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (the previous Android OS generation). iOS users will get a special update in Instagram 4.1: straightening correction. Move the image's horizon degree by degree until it's perfectly straight by tapping the new straightening button for still images in the far left.

LG's New Speedy G2 vs. the Galaxy S4

Another Android phone is on its way, and this time, it's from LG Electronics, which announced its new flagship smartphone, the LG G2, earlier today.

Another Android phone is on its way, and this time, it's from LG Electronics, which announced its new flagship smartphone, the LG G2, earlier today. The 5.2-inch, 4G LTE-capable mobile device is the first in LG's new "G" Series, a line of premium devices poised to compete with Android front-runners such as the Galaxy S4, HTC One, and upcoming Moto X.

The LG G2 is the first smartphone with a Snapdragon 800 chip, a 2.3 GHz quad-core graphics processor that packs a lot of power into the new device. That's not the G2's only distinctive feature — the phone's main buttons (volume and power) are placed on its backside, unlike most phones' side positioning (a potential back-pocket disaster?).

Aside from speedy processing and distinctive hardware, what sets the LG G2 apart from the competition? We pitted LG's new marquee phone against the most popular Android device, the Galaxy S4.

LG G2 Galaxy S4
Processor 2.26 GHz Snapdragon 800 1.9 GHz Snapdragon 600
Display 5.2 inch, 1080 x 1920 pixels, 423 ppi 5 inch, 1080 x 1920 pixels, 441 ppi
Memory 32 GB or 16 GB 64, 32, or 16 GB
RAM 2 GB 800 MHz 2 GB
Camera Rear: 13 MP, Front: 2.1 MP Rear: 13 MP, Front: 1.9 MP
Battery 3,000mAh 2,600mAh
OS Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2
Size 138.5 x 70.9 x 8.9 mm 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9 mm

LG bests the S4 in processor, battery, and front-facing camera, but Samsung's flagship still has more pixels per image on its display and, while the Galaxy has a slightly smaller screen size, it does come in a more portable package.

The G2 will ship with some handy Android modifications like "Answer Me," which will answer a call if the phone is raised to an ear, and "Guest Mode," which unlocks with a secondary guest passcode and displays only select apps.

Price and availability are not yet announced, but the LG G2 will be offered on the US's major carriers: AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint. T-Mobile and AT&T already have landing pages, where interested customers can sign up to be notified when the G2 is ready for preorder.

Deep in the Amazon, Discover Original Works of Art

Amazon first revolutionized the way books were sold, then quickly expanded into everything from electronics to beauty to pet supplies — everything except fine art.

Amazon first revolutionized the way books were sold, then quickly expanded into everything from electronics to beauty to pet supplies — everything except fine art. Shopping for original works of art is an investment and an extremely personal endeavor. Amazon is hoping to digitize that experience with today's launch of Amazon Art, an online marketplace for fine art in classic mediums like painting, drawing, photography, and printmaking.

Over 4,500 artists and 40,000 pieces from galleries across the US, the UK, the Netherlands, and Canada are already listed on the site. Amazon Art acts as a broker of sorts, allowing customers to purchase works directly from gallery partners such as Paddle8, Abmeyer + Wood, Luster, and Little Collector.

There's a wide range of offerings on the site, from pieces priced at $200 to works that cost well over $10,000. Norman Rockwell's "Willie Gillis: Package from Home" is on sale for $4.85 million, and — because this is Amazon — the classic painting ships free.

Amazon Art's landing page acts as a guide, categorizing pieces by medium, genre, and gallery. If you're looking for a human touch, there are staff-curated featured picks as well. For shoppers with specific price points, there's an under-$200 gallery with more affordable artwork.

On the individual art listing, read more information about the artist and the piece, see more works from the artist, and check out other offerings from the gallery. Customers can also inspect the piece close-up and preview it in a real room setting.

Poke around Amazon's new foray into fine art, and let us know if something special catches your eye. If Amazon doesn't have what you're looking for, head to POPSUGAR Home for the best online sources for affordable art.

6 Ways NASA Is "Increasing the Awesome"

NASA Deputy Administrator Lori Garver is stepping down from her position as second in command of the US space agency for a job in the private sector starting September 6.

We're sad to see the leading lady of US space exploration and research go, but we're reminded of Lori's Reddit AMA, where she noted all the ways NASA is "increasing the awesome" (her description of the future James Webb Space Telescope program). Lori deferred all what-if questions to other galactic authorities ("My public affairs folks suggest Neil deGrasse Tyson Smiling," she responded to one Redditor), but she did have a lot to say about the future of social media, education, outer planetary exploration, and more.

See how NASA is working to increase the awesome (our new mantra, by the way) in the gallery and, if you're itching for more NASA news, direct your burning questions to @NASASocial.

Neil deGrasse Tyson Takes On the Universe, Haters, and Turtlenecks

No, Neil deGrasse Tyson will not be wearing a turtleneck for the return of Cosmos, a reincarnation of Carl Sagan's original PBS series hosted by our favorite social-media-savvy astrophysicist.

No, Neil deGrasse Tyson will not be wearing a turtleneck for the return of Cosmos, a reincarnation of Carl Sagan's original PBS series hosted by our favorite social-media-savvy astrophysicist. On Aug. 4, Neil took to Reddit to answer the Internet's most pressing questions about Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, which airs in 2014 on Fox.

In his fourth Ask Me Anything, Neil revealed what's returning to the Cosmos remake, offered sound advice to astrophysicists-in-training, and settled on his favorite GIF of himself once and for all. We've compiled the best quotes from Neil deGrasse Tyson's AMA that confirm, once again, that the new Cosmos host is, indeed, a badass.

What do you think is the most effective way to educate American citizens (and people in general) in order to increase scientific literacy?

"Dare I suggest that Cosmos, airing in primetime on network television, will play its role in this struggle."

What's your favorite .gif of yourself?

"I guess the original of me posturing while talking about Isaac Newton, that itself got pencil-sketched to become the 'badass' meme."

How similar will your new series be to the original? Will you cover similar, or the same topics?

"13 episodes, like the original. Cosmic Calendar returns. So does the Ship of the Imagination. But in 21st century versions. I, of course, am taking over as host. But I will be sans turtleneck."

What has surprised you the most about creating the new 'Cosmos'? The process as well as the reactions of those who hear about it?

"The people who say with disdain and disgust: 'It's appearing on Fox? Their viewers don't know any science!' And I simply reply, 'If true, that makes Fox the best network of them all on which to air this series.'"

What's your favorite part of the show? Do you enjoy filming? Why?

"You get a glimpse of the Space Ship of the Imagination from the trailer. It's a literal and figurative vehicle to move through space and time, and, quite frankly, it's badass. But that will be for viewers to judge. I enjoyed filming in the set for the ship. Gesturing to all manner of places in the universe — past and present."

Read on for Neil's tips for pursuing an astronomy career.

It's Find My iPhone . . . For Androids!

It was right there — in a pocket, on the bedside table, by the keys — but that phone must have gotten up and walked away, because now it's gone.

It was right there — in a pocket, on the bedside table, by the keys — but that phone must have gotten up and walked away, because now it's gone. Until now, only iOS users had the ability to locate their devices and protect their data remotely, through the official Find My iPhone app (free). Over the weekend, Google announced that it was finally bringing that feature to Android.

Like Find My iPhone, Android Device Manager, available as an app or on the web, will find and wipe multiple lost devices.

The Android team said the device manager will roll out "later this month" for Android 2.2 and up, but some Reddit users have already received the update in Device Admins.

With Android Device Manager, users will be able to force their phone to ring at maximum volume (even if the phone is set to silent) from an app or the web. The phone's location will also appear on a map in real time if the device is turned on and connected to the network. If the Android phone is truly out of your reach, then users can turn on the lock screen, change the lock screen's passcode, or completely wipe the device's data.

The new feature is a part of Google Play Services, and the standalone Android app and website is due to launch in the coming weeks. While Android Device Manager is an app that most hope to never use, a device locator for Android devices is long overdue. As someone who's had to remotely wipe a stolen device, the Android announcement is certainly welcome news.

He's alive! OK, not exactly a spoiler that our brave detective survived the great Reichenbach Fall, but the new official teaser trailer for Sherlock season three, which began filming this Spring, has certainly piqued our curious minds. Press play to see all the clues the show has given us so far.

Last week, BBC One confirmed that Lars Mikkelsen will play villain Charles Augustus Magnussen in the upcoming season. Today's teaser reveals that Watson has grown a mustache, and appears to be on some sort of dinner date (but with whom is still a mystery). Sherlock is looking as in good health as ever. In fact, cocreator Mark Gatiss confirmed that Benedict "still looks very trim and gets more handsome with every year" at Sherlock's Comic-Con 2013 panel.

The third season of Sherlock will air this Fall on BBC One and, for US residents, in 2014 on PBS Masterpiece.

Hi! A Platform That Turns Social Media Into Stories

After visiting a new city, travelers quickly realize that it's not the iconic landmarks that make the most lasting impressions — it's the little details.

After visiting a new city, travelers quickly realize that it's not the iconic landmarks that make the most lasting impressions — it's the little details. Like how Italians bid each other "grazie mille" (one-thousand thanks) or how brilliantly colored saris fill the streets of India.

These snippets of stories paint a larger picture of a city, a culture, and a country, and a new social platform called Hi! is bringing together these smaller pieces to create a "narrative map of the world."

A graph of 20 words or fewer, with or without a photo, is attached to a location. This is called a "moment." Each moment has its own page, like this flirtatious sketch above (click for more detail), and on that page is the option to extend the moment to 10,000 or even 100,000 words.

Hi! offers its users the opportunity to build a story from their moments. The idea of going back to a post, updating it, revising it, and expanding it is certainly a fresh take on social media. Neither Facebook nor Twitter allows users to return to their posts — once it's in cyberspace and published, it's done.

Hi! wants to "encourage the habit of seeing," which is to say, to observing and noting things. Cybercitizens have grown accustomed to observing the world through a square-shaped, filtered Instagram image. This social network encourages its users to look beyond the pretty picture and find the story of a place. All of these moments are collected and plotted on a map for all to see. This network of storytellers captures not only the visuals, but also the sentiment of a particular part of the world.

Sign up for Hi! at sayhi.co/register. It may take a little while to receive an invite, but you can browse moments in over 640 active cities in the meanwhile.

The Fully Customizable Moto X: Pros and Cons

Google's mission is to make the Internet as accessible as possible and, with the announcement of the new Moto X smartphone, the tech company looks to be bringing that same principle to hardware.

The user-friendly Moto X is fully customizable — the front, back, accents, wallpapers, and back engraving are chosen by the user. Don't like your design right away? Motorola will let customers return or redesign their Moto X within 14 days (30 for California residents).

Google completed its $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility in 2012, and the Moto X marks the first new smartphone line in the post-Google Motorola era. Unlike the Galaxy S4, the device isn't bogged down with tons of gimmicky features, just a few software quirks that get users the information they need quickly and without interruption.

With over 2,000 possible combinations, the Moto X is this generation's Nokia 8290 (you know, the one with interchangeable face plates). It's a smartphone that will appeal to users who are concerned with the look, feel, and usability of their devices, rather than fixating on the technical details.

The 4.7-inch Android device has a 720p AMOLED display and 10MP rear-facing camera (2MP front-facing). It's powered by a 2GB of RAM and weighs 130g. Moto X will land in stores and online in the US, Canada, and Latin America by late August/early September. Sprint, US Cellular, Verizon, and AT&T will carry Moto X ($200 for 16GB and $300 for 32GB, with two-year agreement), but customization is exclusive to AT&T.

Considering Motorola's new Moto X? We weigh the pros and the cons.

Have Camera, Will Travel: Where Not to Take Photos

While soaking up the sights, you'll be tempted to capture every waking moment.

While soaking up the sights, you'll be tempted to capture every waking moment. But not everything is subject to photography, and it's better to err on the side of caution when submersed in a foreign culture.

If in doubt, follow the golden rule of travel photography: don't assume. When it comes to photography etiquette, ask before you shoot and follow these simple guidelines for shutterbugs abroad.

  • Portraits — Sometimes, the beauty of a new place is the locals themselves. Taking candid shots of people on the street or in the marketplace can be difficult if you're always having to ask permission. Pro photog Matt Kadey says, "When you're taking photos of people, you should get permission." You may change the nature of the photo, Matt says, but sometimes if you take the picture first and show them the image afterward, that can break the tension. If there's a language barrier, point the camera and gesture toward your subject to get the message across.
  • Should you pay people to take their photos?Photographer Jonah Kessel thinks no, because even a small economic gain can change traditional lifestyles and culture. He believes that tourism should leave no mark on the local culture. We say: assess your situation and do what you think is best for that local area. If it's a street performer or local personality, for example, then payment may be expected.
