NASA Gets in on the Inauguration Magic

While Washington DC is filled with musicians and celebrities this week to celebrate the second inauguration of President Barack Obama, there's a group on the ground that holds a special place in the geek heart — NASA. The space agency used inauguration weekend as an opportunity to let the public check out the NASA headquarters, mingle with astronauts and the team responsible for the Mars Curiosity rover, and get children excited about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education.

NASA was also at the Inaugural Parade, with full-size models of two spacecraft, the Curiosity rover and the Orion capsule. Walking with the floats were astronauts Alvin Drew, Serena Aunon, Kate Rubins, Mike Massimino, Lee Morin and Kjell Lindgren, Leland Melvin, and John Grunsfeld, along with the Curiosity team from California including Mohawk Guy Bobak Ferdowsi. Hip hip hooray for science's big day at the festivities!

The Church That Legos Built: Lego-Style Bricks Make an Architectural Appearance

Tired of plain, gray concrete architecture, Dutch design firm LOOS.FM took inspiration from our favorite toy blocks to create the Abondantus Gigantus, a 65-foot tall church-shaped public pavilion for the 2011 Grenswerk Festival in Enschede, The Netherlands.

Those aren't actual supersize Legos that make up the structure; they're called Legioblocks, concrete blocks similar in form to the toys. LOOS.FM painted the drab concrete in the five primary colors seen in popular Lego sets and were used randomly throughout the building process. We have more views of the Lego "church" in the gallery.

Back in NASA's early days before they implemented space missions, engineers built to-scale miniature replicas of the intended voyage. The model below was made for the Apollo lunar landing in 1963. The composition of the bright shining stars, metallic astronaut, and round white moon rocket would make a great print for the space geek in your life, don't you think?

Geek Shot: Augmented Reality

The work of Berlin-based artist Aram Bartholl examines the blurred lines between our physical lives and encroaching digital borders.

The work of Berlin-based artist Aram Bartholl examines the blurred lines between our physical lives and encroaching digital borders. His public art series, Map uses the familiar red destination marker from Google Maps to question how technology dictates the center of the city and how it then directs citizens' real lives.

Aram took further inspiration in creating a near 20-foot high scale model from how when in Google Maps' satellite mode, the red marker seems to actually be a part of the city rather than just the animated map. Map has appeared in cities in Germany, Poland, and Taiwan.

That's right people, they are back. Mariana sent me this pretty picture of her and her friend Courtney enjoying a soda and showing off their trendy glasses at a restaurant in San Francisco. If these two aren't geek chic, I don't know what is.
